    Running Boat on Garden hose

Here is the "Red Neck way" of running the boat on the hose at home. This has worked great and thought i'd share my set up. Cost of about 35$

I ordered the Cam and Grove couplers from Grainger.com
    Items ordered:
    (1) 1 1/4 Female coupler, hose shank, poly, Item # 1DPK8
    (1) 1 1/4 Male adapter, hose shank, poly, Item# 1DPL1
    (1) 1" make adapter, hose shank, poly, Item # 1Dpk3

    Lowes or home depot items:
    10ft of spa hose
    (1) 35 gallon rubber-maid or equivalent trash can.
    (7) hose claps for up to 1 1/4 hose to fasten the hose shank adapters.

Insert the 1" male hose shank poly adapter into one end of the spa hose
Cut the water intake line that is leaving the water strainer going to engine, leaving about 8" of hose connected to the strainer.
Slide (2) Hose clamps onto hose and then Insert the 1 1/4" male hose shank poly adapter into hose and tighten.
Slide (2) hose clamps onto the hose and then Insert the 1 1/4" female hose shake poly adapter into the other end of the water intake hose. Basicly the other end of the hose that was cut. You can cut some extra hose off of this end to accomadate the space that the cam and groove connections take up. It makes it easy to connect and disconnect.
There you have it. Also with this set up if you ever start to take on water while boating that the bilge pumps are keeping up with, hole in boat, and you haven't jumped over board, leave engine running and disconnect the hose and drop the hose into the hull. The engine will suck it right up. That would be my last resort for sure, but its an option when all else fails.

When i run the boat on this set up, there is no temp diffrence because of the connections, have had zero problems with this set up. Has worked great

Where the trash can comes into play is when your at home. Fill trash can about 1/2 full of water. Run the hose through the handle so it dont fall out while running. Disconnect your hose from the strainer at the connections, connect your male spa hose to your water intake to the engine, drop it into the trash can of water on the side of boat, and fire up! I always check to make sure there is suction right after starting the boat. Leave the garden hose on so its filling the trash can up while your boat is sucking it out. Let it run as long as you need, always watching the water level in trash can just in case the hose isnt keeping up. If its not keeping up, then before you start fill the trash can up 3/4 of the way, that way you can run longer.

I attached pictures of the set up. Pretty easy and simple way of running on hose at home.

I installed this on my boat for about $55. You hook a garden hose right up to it.

Doh, Wake_fun beat me to it. You can also just hook a garden hose up to one of these, unscrew the engine water line after the strainer, and insert the blue thing into the engine hose... but you risk it blowing off.

However, props to the OP. This is a pretty slick setup.

I just installed this on my 2000 San and it works great!!! If forget to put the cap on it's got a valve to block it off. Not a bad price neither.

bj -- I know this is a very old post so hopefully you're still on here & will reply (or someone else will). But I just bought everything you listed to complete the project. Just curious why you installed the connections on the "motor side" of the water strainer & not on the "intake side" of the strainer? Almost everything I've seen or read has the connections on the "intake side". Does it matter for your particular way? I was wondering if doing it on the "intake side" would be safer just incase there's dirt or something in the water/trash can?
          Thanks.

I would say if you're worried about dirt or such being in the trash can, then you should put it on the intake side of the strainer.

Brilliant - I just purchased one of these flush-pro 1" devices off of Amazon. I will also use a sump pump I have to add antifreeze next winter.
