My 01 san Surf Plate project

I'm working on a "surf plate" with the help of a friend. We have made the " surf plates " out of aluminium for now until we have tested them. They are manually operated but once we have confirmed they work we will be making them again out of stainless and my friend is looking at automating them too. I am yet to mount them on the boat and they may need some tweeking once fitted. I did find that the distance between the edge of the starboard side of the transom and the platform mount is actually bigger than the port side. Hoping to fit them this weekend so will show some pictures once done. They will mount directly onto the platform transom mounts.

Here's what I have so far. ( Sorry images not great)

This image consists of starboard and port, both with a front and back plate

This image is with the centre plate fitted and the manual release handles. Surf plate in normal position

This image is as above but surf plate deployed.

I don't know yet if when deployed the plates are out enough to create a decent wave but we are very limited to what space we can use on the back of this model san.

Have you seen this thread: http://www.planetnautique.com/vb3/sh...SS-build/page9

It looks like it might be a bit difficult to fit a fully actuated NSS style plate into an old 210 hull. It kinda looks like you're doing something similar to Moomba surf system:

Yes I have seen the 220 thread. The 220 does have more surface area to play with.
I suppose it is similar to the moomba surf system except mine slides out like the NSS instead of rotating out like the moomba.

I'm not sure how good it will work or whether it will work at all. Fingers crossed.

The plates didn't fit exactly how I wanted and had to make some adjustments with the grinder.

Didn't really like how it was looking after I had hacked bits off so took some more measurements and took them back to my friends to get them sorted. Hopefully have them back soon for mk2.

Been a while as not been having the best weather in the UK. And when we have had decent weather I have just wanted to use the boat. Anyway refitted the plates and tested last weekend. The surf wave is definitely better than it was before. I could hardly get a surfable wave on the port side even with the boat heavily listed. Anyway so far I have tested it with both ballast tanks and the centre sac full and either side plate deployed and speed around 9mph. Here is a photo of Me riding port side with starboard plate deployed.
much better than before and I think if I play with the ballast I could get it even better. The length of the wave seems alot longer also.

Here's one of my buddy riding starboard side with port side plate deployed. The starboard side isn't too bad anyway but this looks better than before and again all ballast full.

And here's a photo of the plates attached. Not the best photo but only one I have at the moment.

I will get some close ups at the weekend. Also these plates at present are only rough cut out of aluminium. Depending on how happy I am with them by the end of the season I will either remove them and start again or get some machined properly.

Let me know what you guys think.

Sorry don't know why the photos are on the bottom too. Won't let me remove.

Wow that is impressive. Much longer than I can get out of mine on the port side.

Thanks guys . We use a small man made lake and are members of the ski club called West Midlands water ski centre in the west Midlands in the UK. It's not very big and there's only 3 boats allowed to run at any one time. But we usually get the water to ourselves and hardly ever have more than one other boat on with us. We usually leave the surfing until the end of our session so we dont screw the water up for anyone else. ( unless the tubers are out)

Water temperature is roughly 59 at the moment.

Yeah the wave is much longer than I have ever had when trying to surf prior to fitting the plates. I think if I empty some ballast and list the boat slightly it should improve more.

I will keep you guys posted of any improvements.

When you take more pics of the plates can you please get some good ones of them deployed?

Yes I will. I would say though that fully deployed they do not protrude more than 1 1/2" from the side of the hull but I will definitely take some for you.

Here's a few photos, the starboard side does deploy further out than the port side, again I think this is due to the plates being cut rough and not exact. I actually think the port side wave is now actually better than the starboard and I think it's because the starboard plate protrudes further so I think the next one I do I will try to get it to deploy further.

I am very curious how the water actually diverts around this on this model boat, I have a 2002 and it's nearly identical so I would love to see a photo or video of the water deflection around your system while it's in action. My next project will be something like this plus a downward trim tab shaped like the Supra system.

AWESOME WORK!! STOKED THAT THE OLDER BOATS ARE GETTING LOVED!
