I finally fixed the rear hatch on my Super Sport. I ordered a new cover from Christines, picked up some new foam locally, and bought some stainless binding post screws that fit the stock screws that were on the hatch from the factory.
As you can see the factory put nylon nuts on the topside to fasten the hatch latches and hydraulic ram to. The nylon nuts eventually went through the vinyl after all these years, splitting and cracking the vinyl. On one of the latches you can see that they've been tightened so much that they actually got pulled into the hatch itself, creating deep holes.
I got some stainless steel plate for backing and tig welded the binding post screws to the plate. So now there are no more nylon nuts to step on and ruin the vinyl, just a nice round head of the screw. The binding screw posts fit through the hatch into holes. I did that for all the hardware, put the new foam on, and used stainless staples for the new vinyl.
Now, you can't even feel the hardware, you can easily take off the hatch, no more spinning screws, no nylon nuts................PERFECT!
