02 SAN Surf tab and ballast install. Lessons Learned

Hello everyone, I have been spending a lot of time getting my 02 SAN making a wave that is surfable. This year I did the horizontal tabs, dual battery, prop and ballast upgrade part deux.

    I started with this:

    My ballast install:
Rear sacs are 1100* with factory pumps, center sac with new Johnson, and bow sac with another new Johnson. Lastly we have a bunch of bags that we can move around. I love being able to fill everything in 10minutes versus the 45 it took with the pump over the side. We usually ride light with my wife and I and our 110lb Akita so extra bags are required.
I hooked each pump to its own switch for extra versatility, and mounted the pumps under the seat abouve the vdrive.

Installed a second battery, I Love it! I followed the earlier thread in the DIY section and finished with great results. Added a starter isolator, switched the amp power in case I need to disconnect the amps and a battery charger.

The Prop; well I must say that I am not feeling the 1578. The monster pitch on the prop does plane the boat when fully loaded, but when cruising it seems to lift the boat out of the water more and makes it lean if weight is not even side to side. A lot of spray too at higher speeds and of course an extra 1000rpm when traveling at 30mph. I might try the 856 to get the best of both worlds.

And the moment You have been waiting for.......

My fail at making horizontal surf tabs. Eat up these Picts first.

Okay so, my wife and I ride regular and have a Ronix Cortez and P5 Diamond.

**Disclaimer**Now this is not a GSA tab so I cannot say theirs would have the same results. This info is from my own experience of my homemade dimensions and material and lastly, the goofy wave on this boat always looks better and I never ride it therefore I cannot confirm if this type of system works on that side but it looks amazing.

Why it doesn't work: When the tab is deployed down it makes the wave bigger but it looses all push. It doesn't matter what angle the end piece is at; changing it doesn't make it better. When using the Sucgate the wave it good but when the horizontal tab is deployed it still looses its push.
When my wife is deployed I'll have enough time to try the vertical Malibu style. And I might keep the horizontal ones but try a swell style plate.
I made the tabs with 1/8" Alu and the tabs bent with the force from the water. 1/4" is recomended for Alu or thinner if doing it in stainless. I chose Alu because if something failed I can easily make another tab but cannot afford new actuators or an extensive repair mid season.
For the switches I went with the Lenco LED one to see their position they work great and are accurate and mounted it to the right of the steering wheel.

We are now surfing with this:

It's easy to make and, using a bamboo board makes it float when it decides to unsubscribe.

    Last year we used this:

Worked well but I did drop one one day and they sink fast lol. So I prefer the sucgate right now.

I will used the extensions on the swim platform to mount the vertical style tab for next years similar post. By the end I will probably have a boat with 5 tabs on the back lol.
If anyone has questions or PM's me please be patient for a return as I am not always on here.

    Cheers!

I forgot wave pics sorry, I only have ones with the sucgate. 10.5mpg and the sucgate is near the transom on the angled part. Bow, centre, left bags full and right bag 3/4 full.

Thanks for the writeup. Sure looks like a lot of work and therefore disappointment. Funny how hard it is to be able to characterize and compare these waves in an apples to apples fashion.
