Hi all...finished my carpet install the other day....I thought I would pass along a few tips I learned from mistakes of course
1. I used from Nautique Parts......16 ounce and 36 ounce carpet.....Gun Metal
2. 3M 90 Heavy Duty Adhesive Spray
I started with the side walls..........all came off easy and all went on easy.....was a great introductory start. (I didn't prep the walls too much...old adhesive was not that left behind that bad....and I figured your not feeling it...more for looks.) I used the 16 ounce
I used 16ounce for boxes and face plates on seating. I took my time taking off the old carpet. It came off very easy.....which proved to be very helpful. I used the old pieces as a template and went about 1" bigger all around for the first.....did a dry fit and trimmed before I did adhesive.
36 ounce Floor carpet was not too bad. I had prepped the floor earlier thinking I was going to do Sea Dek....so I had sanded it completely down.
Laid it out full in the boat and started with some big trim cuts. Trimmed and trimmed and finally it was fitting nice with the sides being last to trim. I then put the rubber rail in rough.....cut carpet so it would fit and be the right size...and I stuffed the carpet in and left it together...unglued.
I started in the front under the stereo and fold it all back....2 to 3 ft at a time.....and did the adhesive with the carpet and rubber trim at the same time.
Taking my time in sections was key too.
The Mistakes I made were on the lids.
1. Make sure the grain of the lid is the same as the flooring you laid. If not.....it will look darker or lighter. Also make sure the carpet is running the same way length wise.
( I had extra and had to re-do this part)
2. Center floor lid was too big from original carpet work. I can think of some reasons why......but to make a long story short.....this was the same piece with the grain the wrong way.....so after I took off the old carpet, I cut a 1/2" off both the top and the side of the lid...(I cut one side only each 1/2")
Not too bad of a project.......was nervous at first......but time was the key.
