Official Centurion Press Release:
Lake Norman, NC (October 26, 2020) - Over the weekend the fifth annual Wakes Giving took place in North Carolina. The yearly event sees people from around the community come together for a surf session, the catch is, instead of donating money for boat fuel, people are asked to bring non-perishable food items for donation. This year there were 35 participants in 5 boats, the total donation haul included $2,400 in gift cards and 1,152 lbs of non-perishable food items for Angles and Sparrows Soup Kitchen in Huntersville, North Carolina.
This year’s Wakes Giving had additional significance as surfers were ‘surfing for Sara’. Sara Sevilla was a loving caring woman who passed earlier this year from acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Sara was always looking for the next adventure and itching to get out onto the lake. She loved cruising around the water with the music turned up, especially the Rolling Stones or Billy Currington. She became hooked on surfing and worked hard to get the hang of it, it was something she loved. While in the hospital Sara would bribe nurses for special treatment with promises of taking them out on the boat and teaching them to surf. Sara wanted everyone to live life to the fullest, and regularly succeeded in bringing smiles to the faces of those around her. She wanted to start a non-profit to help the community and those less fortunate, considering how Sara lived it was only fitting that this year’s Wakes Giving be held in her honor. Participants were encouraged to share the hashtag #Shred4Sara on social media to honor her memory and the values she lived for.
