Since 2004, Russia’s Dubna Stop has been one of the most spectacular of the entire Waterski & Wakeboard World Cup series. Better known as the home of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, the City is located just north of Moscow. The perfect choreography of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the enormous Volga River Grand Stand filled to capacity, the full support of the City of Dubna, plus high level performances by the athletes, produce the perfect combination for a high quality event.
This venue of the World Cup has also hosted F2000 Boat races, the Aquabike Russian Cup and is the site of the famous Nekhaevskie’s Waterski School. This School’s athletes have won eight World Championship Medals and established five World Records and nine European Records over the years.
On July 29th and 30th, the very best Slalom, Jump and Shortboard athletes will return to Dubna to fight for their share of the season’s World Cup Cash Prize of US$780,000. Fourteen countries will be represented. This year, every IWSF athlete currently ranked number one in the World will compete. In Slalom, these will include Chris Parrish and Karen Truelove from the USA, in Jump Freddy Krueger (USA) and Ageliki Andriopoulou (GRE) and in Shortboard Nicolas LeForestier (FRA) and Mandy Nightingale (USA). In addition to this, five World Champions will be on the water. Rarely do so many of the top ranked athletes appear at a single event. However, the attraction of the World Cup series has produced substantial waiting lists for places and the level of competition for these is steadily increasing.
MasterCraft, as a World Cup Sponsor, will again supply the competition boats. In 2005, the City of Dubna, with the support of Mayor Prokh, purchased one of these to ensure that their Waterskiers could continue to train at the highest level. Igor Gorelov, Chairman of Akrilan and also a World Cup Sponsor stated that as a local employer in the Bath and Shower products industry, his company has a social responsibility to provide the residents of Dubna with a weekend of enjoyment at this city centre venue. All is now ready on site for July 29th/30th.
The athletes currently ranked number one in the World in Shortboard – Nicolas LeForestier and Mandy Nightingale, also happen to be the Dubna World Cup Stop defending champions. However, none of the others with this World ranking in Slalom or Jump took the top place last year on the podium here. These defending Dubna champions not ranked number one in the World include Natalie Hamrick and Jamie Beauchesne from the USA in Slalom – and June Fladborg (DEN) and Jaret Llewellyn (CAN) in Jump. This promises to produce a very high level of competition for the 30,000 spectators at the Sunday Finals.
