PINE MOUNTAIN, GA (May 26, 2006) — The 47th Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament™ presented by Correct Craft, Inc. got under way Friday at Callaway Gardens, in Pine Mountain, Georgia, with the elimination rounds of the 14th Junior Masters water ski events and the preliminary rounds of Men's wakeboarding competition. This invitation only event pits the top athletes in the world in thrilling on-water competition through Sunday.
The Junior Masters tournament features male and female athletes under 18 years of age competing in tricks, slalom, jump and best overall in water skiing and junior men’s competition in wakeboarding.
The top spot in female trick competition went to Whitney McClintock with 5400 points. Caroline Hensley placed second and Nancy Chardin claimed third and will advance to the finals. McClintock also placed first in slalom while Evdokia Liakou and Miranda Tiare claimed second and third respectively. Alex Lauretano jumped 141 feet taking first place and falling just shy of the course record by one tenth of a meter. McClintock and Chardin placed second and third. Chardin holds the current course record.
Pierre Ballon earned 7680 points placing first in junior men’s tricks followed by Adam Pickos and Storm Selsor. Matteo Luzzeri placed first in slalom with Stelio Merolla and Bernardo Graf placing and third. Stephen Critchley jumped 174 feet qualifying him for the finals along with Martin Bartalsky, and Zack Worden.
In junior men’s wakeboarding, the top four athletes advancing to the finals include first place winner Adam Errington followed by Jimmy Lariche, Harley Clifford and Nick Jones.
Junior Masters competition will resume at 7:30 am Saturday.
Men’s wakeboarding competition featured sixteen riders divided into four heats. Chad Sharpe, Jeff Weatherall, Dan Nott, and Danny Harf won their heats and will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday. Four additional athletes advance through the last chance qualifier round including Andrew Adkinson, Rusty Malinoski, Tino Santori and Daniel Watkins. The men’s semifinals will follow the women’s competition on Saturday.
Saturday’s competition will include men’s and women’s slalom, tricks and jump skiing and men’s and women’s wakeboarding. The Masters waterski competition begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, with head to head competition in semifinals/finals starting at 11:00 a.m. Sunday. All events are sanctioned by USA Waterski and USA Wakeboard.
