The Masters Waterski and Wakeboard Tournament is the longest-running waterskiing competition in the world. This tournament began in 1958 at Callaway Gardens, and has continued consecutively, with the exception of a single year.
The Robin Lake site at Callaway Gardens has a course-centered covered pavilion with judges tower and media area, offering covered seating for spectators. The tournament can be seen clearly from the beach and picnic area; as well as on a giant-screen TV for up-close live action viewing on the beach. The renowned Callaway Gardens setting is garden-like and immaculately maintained.
An invitation to compete at the Masters is universally considered an honor and an acknowledgement of achievement for reaching the pinnacle in a given waterskiing discipline-only the world's most elite athletes ski the Masters! This tournament is IWSF/AWSA. The Masters Overall perpetual trophies for this tournament have resided in the past at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Overall events at the Masters has been discontinued as an event in 2001 and these impressive trophies originally procured by Callaway Gardens have been retired to the Water Ski Hall of Fame in Winter Haven, Florida.
The Junior Masters Waterski Tournament offers the same elite and exclusive competition to the world's finest waterskiing and wakeboarding athletes. In lieu of prize monies, junior competitors receive trophies and scholarship monies. The Junior Masters will introduce new Junior Overall Perpetual Trophies to establish an emphasis on Overall skiing in the junior ranks.
Callaway Gardens' Robin Lake nestles in a most unique and beautiful atmosphere conducive to fan loyalty. Fans start calling for next year's tickets and reservations in the middle of the summer prior to this extravaganza. This event attracts thousands of spectators annually and enjoys media coverage in the local and metropolitan Atlanta areas prior to and during the tournament, followed by worldwide print coverage for several months.
The Masters has often provided other disciplines in exhibition, such as barefooting, wakeboarding, and ski flying before they became Masters events in 1994 and 1998 respectively. The Masters has been instrumental in introducing the water sports industry to new and exciting disciplines like wakeboarding and ski flying, lending early credibility and support to them.
The Masters Waterski and Wakeboard Tournament, always held over Memorial Day weekend, includes many athletes and sponsors amenities, such as a free golf tournament, a VIP Reception on Saturday night, an Awards Banquet on Sunday evening, warm-up suits for all participating athletes and more. The Masters also continues a commitment to uphold its prestigious traditions.
