Official WWA Press Release:
Melbourne, AUS (January 15, 2022) - The Moomba Masters and Victorian Water Ski Association (VWSA) announced today that for the first time equal prize money will be awarded across men’s and women’s pro competitions at the 2022 Moomba Masters water-ski and wakeboard tournament presented by Nautique.
Moomba Masters Chairman Darren Robertson said equal prize money is another step towards gender equality in sport.
“The female athletes that compete in the Moomba Masters are hugely talented and deserve to be recognised equally alongside our male athletes and this includes equal prize money.
“We are proud to offer equal prize money across the women’s and men’s pro competitions from this year,” Mr Robertson said.
From 9 - 14 March, the best water-skiers and wakeboarders in the world will meet at Melbourne’s Yarra River in Victoria, Australia to compete across Moomba Long Weekend.
The Pro Masters divisions will again include Women and Men’s Tricks, Women and Men’s Slalom, Women and Men’s Jump and Women and Men’s Wakeboarding, with each of these divisions awarded equal prize money.
This year will also see the biggest prize purse in the event’s history at AUD $200,000.
Each of the three event Pro divisions will payout AUD $22,000 per event with Pro Wake to be AUD $25,000 due to increased sponsorship of that discipline. Night jump and night slalom will receive the balance of the prize purse with an increase of AUD $12,000.
Event Secretary Francis Hynes said 2022 will be one of the best years yet.
“Between the prize equality and having the largest prize purse ever, these are some of the biggest steps forward since the event’s beginning.
“It continues to evolve and we are very proud of the direction we are heading.
“We are excited to welcome everyone to the Moomba Masters in March,” said Ms Hynes.
Lord Mayor Sally Capp said, “The Moomba Masters is a much-loved feature of our Moomba Festival, and we’re thrilled to welcome some of the world’s best water-skiers and wakeboarders to Melbourne to delight crowds along the Yarra River.”
The Moomba Masters is delivered by the VWSA with support from event partner, Nautique, and the City of Melbourne.
