Official Watershed Innovation Press Release:
Brevard County, FL(August 10, 2021) - The Watershed Innovation team volunteered to help restore water clarity in the Indian River Lagoon through oyster gardening.
Oysters have been negatively affected over time through environmental strain like harmful fishing methods, mass harvesting that isn’t sustainable, and waste. Because oysters play a key role in naturally filtering water, when their population declines so does water quality. That’s where oyster gardening comes in. This process is used to restore oysters that filter excess nutrients out of the water. These harmful nutrients often come from man-made sources like lawn fertilizer runoff and septic tanks. One oyster filters approximately 50 gallons of water per day.
Watershed Innovation, a Correct Craft company solely devoted to disruptive innovation, worked with Restore Our Shores and the Brevard Zoo on the program. The team gave homes to newborn oysters in a safe permitted location to return oysters to a healthy population. The project has already grown over 500,000 live oysters, and the long-term success of the program will be monitored closely by Restore Our Shores.
Sean Marrero, President of Watershed Innovation stated, “Our team is committed to creating a better tomorrow today not just in the technology we bring to market but also in the world around us. Without clean, living water, there is no boating…it’s that simple. I could not be prouder of our team for focusing on the things we can do to support clean water initiatives like oyster restoration.”
