Hello. I purchased my 1990 ski nautique last year and replaced the starter last year around may. I have researched and found many threads about this problem with the starter staying engaged but everyones is a little different setup so I just wanted to post my setup and see if anyone has any input on it. first off I have 2 blue top optima batterys with isolator running two amps and four inboat 6.5 rockford speakers and two wetsounds tower speakers. The way my set up is when i have the ignition button and the aux switch pushed on the right side of the boat it is supposedly running off of both batterys and then when im on the sandbar just listening to music I use just the aux switch for the stereo which is pulling off of one battery.
So yesterday we sat on the sandbar for about 3-4 hours just listening to the music with no problems. I decide to get in and just ride up river to let the audio battery charge some. So i get in push the ignition button and crank the boat which it cranks fine but then the starter stays engaged. so i turn the key off and both switches and it still is turning the motor over which it did this for probably 2-3 minutes. I finally get to my battery in the floor of my boat and get the cables off.
I let the boat sit for 5-10 minutes hook the cables back up and the boat spun over just like it was supposed to and ran fine. we rode up to another sandbar and sat for about 1 hour and listened to audio on the aux switch again and then when we left i turned on the ignition switch and it cranked fine again. it did this two weeks ago also but the starter turned loose after about 10 seconds and that was the only time it did it all day.
just did not know if the audio battery getting low on voltage is causing this , which i would not think so since the other battery is full just sitting there waiting to crank the boat. I have read where the this might be the solenoid sticking or maybe the bendix needs some lubrication. any help on this is greatly appreciated. just wanted to get someones opinion before i just start pulling the starter off and stuff. thanks ahead of time.
