I have the 2011 X5 35d and that engine pulls it really well and much better than my wife's Tacoma. There are much better dedicated tow vehicles but for our 25 min drive to the lake it's great. I pulled my last boat which was 700lbs lighter 10hrs through the Canadian rockies easily up mountain passes without a hiccup. You can feel it back there but I still feel stable and in control. In fact, I had an urgent incident last week where I had to slam on my breaks and swerve out of a lane and it handle amazingly well.
If I were to do it again, I would get the invisihitch versus the north american OEM hitch. The invisihitch is the producer for the X5 hitch outside of North American and puts the tow rating at 7700lbs vs 6000lbs.
