    2001 Super Sport restoration

Now that summer is a distant memory, I finally got this thing done. I stripped it down over a year ago thinking I would have it ready March or April but had to prioritize other projects.

The boat was pretty average cosmetically when I got it but the dealer I brought it from had replaced the engine (new long block) and repainted the transmission and gearbox so it was solid mechanically. 95% of this boat has been taken apart and refinished or replaced. Here's what I did:

    - Wet sanded the entire boat including the hull bottom. Had some gouges to fix and that was a challenge color matching.
    - Removed the carpet and gel coated the floors with the original color spec. New carpet in the hull sides etc.
    - Boat didn't run that great at first. So it got a full tune up and after going over the entire electrical system and installing duel batteries it runs perfect and everything works like new.
    - The windscreen and deck hardware was sandblasted, power coated, wet sanded and painted with a metallic silver single stage polyurethane. The tower powder coat was just faded so it got sanded and painted gloss black. All stainless hardware was re-polished.
    - I wanted the interior to look original but a little more modern. The only pieces I reused were the hatches, helm frame, back seat base, dash/side pods and the fiberglass combings. The port side base now includes part of the clam-shell and the stbd side base is a cooler that drains into the bilge. All new 50/100 lbs boat foam and a really nice quality leather look marine vinyl. I re-trimmed both the helm pods in matching vinyl/color and made a woven vinyl mat for the floor.
    - Boat didn't have sound so I went for a modest system to go with the overall scheme on the interior. Wetsounds HTX 6 channel amp, 4x XS-650 speakers (behind the combings), 1x EX-12 sub in a sealed box under the glovebox and a Clarion black box head unit. Gotta say it sounds really good, much better than I thought it would.

In the new year I need to put a little work into the trailer, probably install a ballast system and then somebody else can have it. Take a look at the photos, has to be one of the nicest Super Sports regardless of year. Personally I like 2000-2001 model years as they have such a classic look.

    Cheers,
    Shaun

Looks awesome! what is the flooring material? I have an '01 too. Nice treatment to the dash. The fresh seam work looks great on the upholstered items.

How did you rear mount the wet sounds and keep the fabric speaker covers?? I'm installing the same system in an 02 and can't get them to fit behind the combing pads so was going to front load them.

amazing project lots of stuff here that I've never seen don't before!

Here is the original interior after I cleaned all the mold off. I never really took any pics of just how rough it all was.

Here are a few more pics of it along the way. t.franscioni, you can see how i mounted the stereo equipment. Expanded PVC adapters and the speaker is screwed to that from the backside. The cutout on the deck needed adjustment as they didn't line up with the speaker hole on the combing pad.

Sorry mate, i couldn't put a price on that. Upholstering each piece took about 5-6 hours. Stripping the old vinyl off and making repairs took days...

I can't remember exactly which one but it does have the HD foam backing and has a really nice feel. Was about $300 for a 10x5' piece.

Sorry for all these questions but you have some solutions here that I know a few of us have been trying to figure out for some time. That being the bigger full size 6.5" speaker mounted in that speaker pod location in the plastic kick panel. Looking at the pic did you cut the end of that plastic speaker pod off to get some of the taper out of it until the hole is big enough to fit the pvc adapter into it? I see the speaker is screwed into the pvc adapter but how is the adapter secured to the pod there in that plastic panel, I don't see any screws in the pic?

the other challenge some of us have had is recovering the dash and the plastic throttle panel? Getting one piece of vinyl to make those tight corners and deep recessed areas seems next to impossible and it seems as though the factory used Unbacked vinyl which would allow for a ton of stretch needed to make those corners. The problem being it's impossible to find unbacked vinyl. Your seams seem to (haha, seams seem) be the solution but could you tell us exactly what kind of vinyl you used on the dash and pod kick panel? Three way stretch, unbacked, ect.??? And how did you apply it? Vacuum bagged and glued?

Last question: how did you finish the side wall carpet where it meet the floor of the hull? Looks like you wrapped the edge of the carpet around a flat piece then secured the flat piece to the bottom edge of the hull floor? How did you attach it? I'm trying to figure out how I should best transition the side wall carpet into sea deck that I may have for the hull floor. Really pumped to finally see solutions to these isssues! Thanks.
