My 99 SAN (The craigslist scam boat)

Some of you have seen this boat amongst the many Craigslist scam ads over the years, I actually saw it listed on Seattle Craigslist about a year ago...

Recently I had an old friend call me out of the blue and asked if I'd sell my boat, I had no plans to sell the boat but everything is for sale if the price is right! So I named my price and he called me back an hour later and said he'd take it.

So the search was on for a new boat, I knew I wanted a 210 so I hit some of the nation wide craigslist search engines and found a few boats that looked promising.

I was doing a google image search for 99 SAN because I was trying to remember the subtle differences from the 99 to the 00-01. So I click on this image linked to this stupid boats of the usa site and the ad was like over a year old, it did however happen to have a phone number. So the next day I called the number and this old guy answers, I ask for him by name and before I can even tell him what I'm calling about he interrupts me and says "I don't know who the **** this is, call me back and leave me a voicemail telling me who you are!" and hangs up on me.

I was totally put off and was kinda like whatever FU in the back of my mind, but I called back and left a voicemail saying who I was and wanted to know if he happed to have the boat still for sale. About an hour later I get a call back and he says sorry I get like 30 calls per day from people trying to sell me drugs from online pharmacies lol. So we chat about the boat for a bit, he wasn't that motivated to sell it and it's just been sitting in storage for the last 3 years or so since his kids are grown up and none of his friends are interested in going out on the lake with him at their age.

So... long story short I had to wait anxiously two weeks to get the cash for my old boat, booked a flight to Vegas and went to close the deal. The boat was everything he said it was for the most part, 274 original hours, a few little very minor cosmetic things that need to be fixed but the boat overall looks like it's maybe 3-4 years old. The trailer has a few rough spots but nothing too bad. He actually even had the Boat Trader from 2001 when he originally purchased the boat!

The boat gets delivered next week, sadly I'll be waiting a bit since boating season is definitely done here in the NW.

I already ordered 3 new Jabsco pumps, a pair of 750s and a triangle bow sack. I'll be ordering stereo parts this week and start all of that over the winter.

Talk to Odin at Earmark Audio. I got all my JL Audio equipment from him. He had the best prices I found and great customer service. Emailed him what I was looking for, got a quote, sent me a PayPal invoice, paid and had my stuff 5 days later.

If for some reason my usual guys don't work out I'll give him a ring, I've got a good hookup that usually sells me most everything at 5-10% over cost.

I'm still trying to plan out how I want to do the stereo in this one, seems the older we get and having the little one out on the boat the majority of the time, the less and less we even use the stereo. I'm thinking this one won't be quite as elaborate as my previous boats.

I noticed you're from LO, are you over on the lake or do you usually ride on the river?

I keep it in Wilsonville at the Boones Ferry Marina. Great launch ramps and a gas dock. Only gas dock on the Upper Willamette.

Nice, that's a great spot up there! We live over in Oak Grove so I have a slip over at Sportcraft. I definitely prefer the upper river but it takes me about 3min to get from my house to the boat. Sportcraft is the last place left on the lower river for fuel unless you go clear to Jansen Beach at this point I think.

Nice find! I'm sure a few hundred people have tried to buy that boat. Such a classic, so how long has the real seller actually been selling it? What's the story behind it and how many owners has it had throughout the years? Nice work!

I'll be the 3rd owner, the guy I picked it up from bought it from the original owner in January of 2002. At that point the boat had 110 hours on the clock, so between January 2002 and now the boat has had roughly 165 hours put on it! He bought the boat for his kids to wakeboard when they were younger but they're all grown up and have families in different states now.

He's in his mid 60s and said most of his friends don't have any interest in going out on the lake anymore so the boat never gets used, he said he would take it out once or twice a year for a quick cruise then pack it back into the storage unit. It's a shame too, he only lives 5min from Lake Mead.

The boat really is in fantastic shape, it definitely needs a new throttle cable as the ones in it now are super stiff. Steering cable is smooth, he says he replaced that two years ago. He kept an extra quart of oil in under the center rear seat that leaked at one point in time and so the carpet needs a good cleaning. I did notice the safety switch was being finicky but that's a cheap easy fix.

Other than that the boat is 100% original as it left the dealer back in 99, just basic service, no modifications done to the boat besides having the battery tender hard wired.

I was actually looking for a newer boat but when I stumbled on to this one with such little hours and so clean I couldn't pass it up.

He had all of the manuals and original books that came with the boat, he even saved the Boat Trader from when he bought the boat.

That's good to know, but where is the gas dock? The only one I am aware of is at Waverly Marina and they tend to limit their fuel sales to marina members only.
