    2004 Sport 216.

I've been bothering everyone at Ballofspray for quite some time trying to find the right boat and the 216 kept coming up in random threads. "if you can find one"

Well, i found one. 650 miles away. https://www.planetnautique.com/vb5/f...e-216-purchase is the thread on the retrieval.

A dealer had it on consignment. The story being that the son was selling it for his dad because the dad has dementia. 511 hours. "always on a covered lift"
Heavy oxidation, but a very clean interior. The boat appears to be a bare option boat. Single battery, aftermarket amp power cable has rotted off due to corrosion. Excalibur 330. It did come with a barefoot bar and a high flyer pole. The son was apparently a barefoot guy.
Key ignition, perfect pass, but tach only shows hours, no buttons to read error codes or depth.

    Pictures are from the listing.

I left Rock Hill, SC at 5:30pm Saturday night with my dad. Stayed in Charleston WV for the night, and at 5 Am we were off to see if i'd found a bargain.

We arrived in Orland, IN at 11am. to find a boat heavily scuffed, with a faded interior, but otherwise working and clean. I was a bit disappointed the exterior condition was worse than promised and the boat went from "oh a quick buff and it'll be ok" and a steal of a deal to good purchase but it needs hours of wetsanding and other work.

The trailer was only used for storage in winter in a heated garage and had 21 year old tires on it (date code march of 03).
As detailed in the other thread, the wheels were identical to the wheels on my 2015 AR240.
Which I had put brand new good year endurance tires on this spring.
I discovered the tire age the day before leaving and so we took them with us, and replaced them in the dealers lot.

At 12:30 we completed the transaction and tire change. then headed to the local lake to refloat the boat and shift it so it was actually on the bow roller stop as it was several inches short and we were worried it would shift during the trip.

After which we then went to tractor supply to get a bow turnbuckle, transom straps, and fix the wiring.
at 2:30 pm we finally hit the road, the wiring had taken us four trips back into the store. We were tired and kept purchasing the wrong things and only realized it twice after wiring and taping everything together that we were wrong.

Dad and I took 2 hour trips, on the way up, we'd achieved 18.9 mpg in my 2014 Ecoboost F150, which had 100,007 miles when we started the journey. On the way back, we saw 10.6 mpg on the trip odometer, though it did creep up to a trip average of 12.9 mpg. The boat towed amazingly well, much more stable than my Ar240. We reached speeds of 86 mph without incident.

(you can see how much more the trailer sticks out here than my truck).

Originally, we had planned on staying in Charleston WV again, but had realized that the parking garage would not work with the boat for the return trip. As such we had decided to try make it to Beckley WV.

As dark hit, we reached Charleston WV and it's super narrow highway with very close shoulders and concrete walls.
This is the same time we realized that though we had fixed the wiring, we could not see the trailer at all. The running lights were dark. We assumed we had no trailer lights at all and started to drive slower. Dad was driving and i was watching the mirror to see the glimpses of trailer in other peoples headlights.
The scariest moment was the moment i realized we were going to hit the concrete barrier and had to shout at dad to drive into the neighboring lane in order to avoid hitting it. it must have been several seconds but it felt like an instant between death on the highway and surviving. Shaken, we stopped at Texas Roadhouse, our first real meal of the day. Where we found out the trailer rear lights were working fine, one running light/fender marker was broken, the other turned on with a touch of a finger.

We ordered our steaks and were done within 30 minutes. back on the road. My turn to drive. As we got on the turnpike and into the toll roads. two emergency vehicles flew past us. But we did not see them again for 30 minutes and assumed they had turned off to help someone.

Nope turns out the second toll had shut down due to an 18 wheel on fire. we came across this at 10pm. and did not move for an hour. Discussions were had about stopping in beckley still as it was now 11pm and late. We had originally left the dealer thinking if we pushed it we could be home by 11pm. Now we were looking at 3am. Dad had a short nap while we were stuck on the highway. I actually turned the truck off and all my lights to help him sleep.

In the end we made it. I slept for 4 hours before being unable to sleep any more. (too used to getting up to workout I guess).

My view from Dad's kitchen the first day.

So that first day, I'd taken PTO but had meetings in the afternoon i could not miss. I helped dad on the farm, then we went on a test drive. The dealer could not let us test drive the boat and we'd only been able to run it on a fake lake to make sure it started and ran without issue.

The wake and handling at speed are everything I remember from growing up on a 1991 Supra Combrio Open bow. If not better thanks to EFI.
The low speed handling is absolutely horrible. It may be worse than the jet boat. and on loading the boat i discovered that unlike my Father in law in his 1996 Body Glove Ski Nautique, I cannot power load. I chipped the gel coat on the nose hitting the underside of the bow roller. Either the trailer was too deep, or it was too shallow or i dont know what all. But i ended up having to get out, and have dad move the trailer around until the winch could pull the bow UP and over the roller.

I raced home after dropping dad off, had my meetings. and then took the kids and met the wife at the landing to launch it again.
We had an impromtu Sushi dinner on the boat and celebrated what has been my dream.
I wanted a ski boat in 2018 but at the time my wife had to bring logic into the equation. "we live an hour from the lake, we have two young kids, we need a different boat. A ski boat is horrible for us." I bought two boats in 2018, a 2011 AR240, then a 2015 Ar240 and sold the 2011. The 2015 has an amazing sound system, high sides, can hold a small village inside. But the entire time i've been biting my tongue waiting for my kids to grow up enough to want to do ski sports. Charles did a ski school with the local club (we moved in the interim closer to the lake) and got up to slalom. My wife has always slalomed and I just make a great show of splashing and falling and never getting up when i ask my FIL for a tow. This boat is here to change all of that. what changed my wife's mind?
a few things. This season I made her drive the Yamaha. She hated it as much as I did.
we also nearly lost our middle child when his kneeboard flipped and he was stuck under it. I did not trust the Yamaha to come back around and get to him without riding him over and my wife dove in after him leaving me with the other two children. I'm a fairly good swimmer. Even 100 lbs above where i used to swim at. She's terrible.
That was the final straw for me. In a ski boat, i'd have been able to come back around to him in seconds rather than stuck watching my wife struggle to get to him.

so i made two statements that day, if she dives in next time I am running her over with the boat. She needs to let me dive in and she drives the boat after him.
and we were selling the Yamaha.

After riding in the boat. Oliver (left in the below image) told me he cannot wait to try ski next season.
"this boat is so much more fun dad!"
I made a point of doing a hard turn at speed and stopping in the wake to show him how much faster we can get to him next time.

I've got many plans for this boat. I've already posted several questions throughout the forum.
She will be clean by water season next year.
I already did a test spot to see what work is needed to get the gel coat back into shape.

I've contacted Wayne at New Dimensions on a tower, bimini, etc. My wife prefers this tower look over the Rosewell and I cant convince her otherwise.
My pocketbook is appreciative though as there is quite a price difference.

I just priced out the same level JL audio as my Yamaha has and i cannot believe the sticker shock. 2 years ago i did some additions to the system and thought it was expensive then. The same speakers I paid 150 for a pair for last year are now 299 on SALE and the amp is up 50% in price as well. So we may just do the interior cabin for now. I'd love to see about finding reproduction speaker pods for the bow. As the boat currently only has four speakers and the aforementioned questionable operation subwoofer.

I've contacted Ramlin and they've responded that they do make a crash pad for the trailer. I'm awaiting further details on cost before i make a decision there.

I've purchased all the standard wear/tear items and intend to do spark plugs, serpentine belt, impeller, plug wires changes to the motor.
I've got a $400 nautiqueparts cart right now (after PND discount) waiting for me to swallow and hit purchase.

I've already had the new tires switched over to the MUCH nicer condition wheels original wheels from this trailer and purchased new tires for the Yamaha as I prep it for sale.

The wife spent two hours out with me yesterday scrapping decals off so I can properly wetsand the boat.

After seeing how clean it looks, i've been pondering using nautique decals from another era. I am not a huge fan of the swirl around the Nautique or the gel/dome texture of the letters. The 170 plus bucks a side doesnt help either.

I agree on getting rid of the hurricane style factory logos, if they get scratched they just never look right again.

I have an 06 and I just removed it and went with the logo lettering from a company called domed numbers. You can pick out any color combo you want and they have that 3-D shape to them so they look awesome.

I did a metallic charcoal with a dark red outline.

*oops nearly quoted against forum rules.!
biacs what font type and height did you select on their webpage? Or did you send it in and ask for the Nautique font?
I really like how clean that looks.

Listed my Ar240 today. I'll tell you what, i thought the season had a few weeks left in it down south. Apparently i was an idiot.

I found they work well on Facebook messenger. But through their website I believe those were 3 inch letters on the hull. But basically if you have any custom lettering or anything, they will email you a link to a digital proof and you can just click buy if you like the way it turned out :-)

But if you're not a Facebook person just get in contact through their website and talk about what you'd like to use, they had the font for Nautique listed as a standard offering.

For example I got bored this summer and had to make giant versions of the logo that were on the vent in the back. Turned out pretty nice

Not sure if I should start a new thread in the restoration sub forum or just keep going here. Jeff?

Tower arrived Friday. Absolutely amazing dealing with Wayne at NDT. Great communication, he's updating as he goes. etc.
I called him 11/4/2022 and received the tower last friday 12/2/2022. 4 weeks. He said he'd have sent it a week earlier, but did not want it in shipping during thanksgiving.
The tower itself despite looking huge, is only 90 lbs shipping weight. That includes the Bimini, two ski racks, pre wired for speakers, and anchor light.
Wayne has also updated the Bimini style from the original. Originally it used a zip to join the two sections of Bimini. Instead it uses two poles set into bungs in the tower, then gets tensioned. Based on his verbal description, exactly like my 2015 Yamaha did. A very very easy to set up Bimini. I did not get a chance to get the tower to the boat this weekend. But it's on the list for the next few days to get it there and open the packaging. The shipper commented on how well protected everything is. I am worried that something is missing because of how light it is and how small the package was. peering through the wrap it definitely seems to all be there.

Also have a JL Amp on it's way 8/800 for 50% off thanks to a boat being parted out on the Jetboater's forum. I missed the full JL speaker and sub setup by an hour, which would have saved me several hundred to a thousand bucks. My cart at Creative audio sans subwoofer and sub amp, is nearly $2k at this point... youch. I"m hesitating on hitting BIY because i want to verify if MX770's will fit in the cabin spots or if only 6.5's will. I have an old 770 from replacing one of the tower speakers on the last boat so i'm going to take it with me to see before i make my decision. i loved my old mx650 setup, but i know the tower cans always sounded substantially better. (more full/warm). part of that is due to a tuned can behind vs open air, though. (also they have some old stock 770's for sale at half the price of the 650's. )
