Ballast for Surfing - Fat Sacks recommended for Rear V-Drive compartments?

I've got a 2001 SAN 210 and am looking to expand ballast in the rear to enable better surfing wake.
Currently running ~250-300lbs estimated each side (i bought used and the sacks aren't marked).

What is the best sack for that space? I am running one hose to both fill and drain, one hose for overflow.
I assume the square sacks are preferred to round models to reduce pressure on engine compartment walls, which are pretty flimsy in the 2001 model.

i have a 96 super sport which is a SAN before there was such a thing and i run two oval 650 pound sacks on each side of the engine and when i fill them up they touch the exhaust manifold a bit but nothing has happened as they don't get that hot, i wish i had gotten the square ones, which is what most guys run, throw some pics of the sacs next to something so we can see what size they are and determine there weight. if you get some 750 lb fly highs for the engine compartment you could use the other sacs for the front and on the back seat of the corner you are surfing.

Use 750 Fly Highs Pros. You will still have a little storage space left on top. They fit very well.

I was running with out my divider walls the other day (actually testing something while on the trailer) and the edge of one of my 750s hit the impeller belt (my sacs were empty). The impeller belt cut two holes in that sac before I could hit stop (and I was in the drivers seat when this happened). I will not run without divider walls in there again. My exhaust manifolds also get pretty hot.

a lot of people say pull the hard tanks and put 750s in there. im like you and value my storage space so that was out of the question.

I've got the 02 SAN team and this is my setup:

port and starboard stock hard tanks = 520
2 Fly high wedges on top of the rear hard tanks = 400 each
center hard tank = 300
full bow triangle = 1100

i fill up the surfing side rear hard tanks and the wedge on top of it, fill the center 300 full, and depending on how many people are in the boat between 1/2 and 3/4 on the bow triangle.

the only thing is on those model boats the prop rotation will not allow you to get near as nice of wake on the port side.. unfortunately i ride regular, so i had to learn how to surf switch.

I'm not sure I understand ^. Ripping out the tanks and adding in sacs (whatever size) creates the possibility for the most storage space. Empty sacs take up virtually no space. Hard tanks always take up space, a lot of it.

The 400's are priced well and should work well for wakeboarding. You would likely need to add more for surfing. I have seen a lot of people start with 400s and then move to 750s. I would recommend skipping the intermediate step and going straight to the 750s. Heck, I'm even contemplating a design where I can move the non-surf side 750 to go on top of the full surf-side 750 and adding about another 200 lbs of water to it.

I use the same set-up now. And I have a 550 lbs Aerial bag I use in the bow. I roll it from side to side depending on which side we're surfing on.

I forgot. I have about 110lbs of lead under EACH sack in the back, one of these in the ski locker, and 110 lbs in the front. Total is about 1800lbs.

I pulled my hard tanks out on my SAN and glad I did. There is alot more room doing it this way I think, and I have 750 on each side of the motor with the walls

I say go with one 750 sac

If you are wanting to surf, don't put anything on the opposite side. The idea isn't necessarily the most overall weight, it's to have the greatest bias to one rear side. I am using the fly high pro 750 on my 05 air nautique 226. Pretty much anyone can with the internal 250 ballast and one or two people sitting on the rear corner, but the wave is massive with both. I don't know about everyone's boat, but with the nauti, there is actually still some room for vests, etc...in front of the sac and on top. I considered the wedges for the flexibility, but glad I didn't go with that. I would just end up having to fill two, as I typically just fill all internal and have people sit evenly for wakeboarding and the ramp is super. Hope this helps.

Yea, that's an issue. I surf a lot of lefts in SD so I've been riding backside and it's pretty fun, but I should learn to surf switch as well!

I just installed 2 x 750's in the rear locker and a 580 in the center ski locker... a friend brought along a tsunami and 200lbs ? spare sack. We placed that on the surf side seat.. filled the 750 on one side and center bag.. pushed a good wake. when empty, I carry most of my gear, bumpers 2 x wakeboards and knee board in the rear compartment on top of the empty sacks.. I LOVE the room to carry stuff since we dont have a tower for the boards. I would not want hard tanks to take up space when they are empty. I increased the height of my engine deviders to the top of the compartment (they were only 6 inches before).. so now nothing touches the bags.. I also made sure that any internal screws or bolts sticking out from installed components, dont touch the bags.. covered them with caps or rubber grommets.. the 750s fill the rear COMPLETELY! when full.... its over 2000# of weight when everything is full.

Update: I went with all the advice and got the 750lbs for the starboard rear locker. Works great! Makes a huge difference.
