Is this a decent board for a couple guys just wanting to learn and goof around with surfing? Owner is asking $125

That seems like a good price and it will work for what you are looking for but if you get hooked on surfing you will outgrow that board quickly. It's good for catching your first waves (especially if you are not running lots of ballast) but it's so big that it is hard to carve around and do much on it other than riding it straight. I picked up an HL Broadcast last season and I have since used that board to teach new people as well as satisfy myself and some other intermediate and slightly more advanced riders. We mainly wakeboard and the Landlock doesn't fit in standard board racks and takes up a lot of room on the floor. Once I realized a good success rate with getting newbies up on the Broadcast I ended up selling my Land Lock. The Broadcast is a great "boat board" that fits in standard board racks, is relatively easy to learn on and is something you can progress on without breaking the bank. I have the shorter size but I am sure the bigger size would be even easier to ride for beginners and/or bigger riders. You can probably pick up last year's model on closeout for under $250 if you look around a little bit.Shawn

I have one and it's a great board to learn on. Only trouble is if you want to do spins etc then it's near impossible to break the fins out of the water. I'm looking to change mine to a different one but not sure which way to go yet. I tried changing the fins for smaller ones but it became too slippy.

For $125... it's a complete no-brainer. Great board to learn on and if you are like most people with a boat, you probably will have a steady stream of newbies. People have given this board a lot of grief for not being able to advance on it, but it's a great cruiser. Often, I like to just take a mellow ride and enjoy being behind the boat. I have a XXX Thrasher when I want a bit more excitement. I recommend purchasing wholeheartedly. -Marc

I agree that for $125 you really can't go wrong but I was just trying to say that if I was to do it all over again I would have skipped the Landlock and gone right to the Broadcast because it is still pretty easy to learn on but it has a much higher ceiling to advance on. Also it is sooo much easier to store than an almost 6' long board that is too thick to fit in most board racks. If you have a Z-5 to keep it up out of the way or quick access to your dock then it might be a different story. Anyways here is last years Broadcast (both sizes) for $250 and free shipping if you decide to go that route:

What size landlock? I believe they made them in 2 or 3 sizes, the most common being 5'6" like mine. I actually have 2 of these. I loaned one to a buddy and ended up buying another to replace it, he gave it back and now it is on long term loan to another buddy. The loaner has a bash in the side with duct tape over it, that is why I bought another. These are great, easy to learn boards that are workable with most wakes and rider weights. I have even tandem surfed with my wife on mine behind my boat (300lbs of rider).

I was basing all of knowledge on the older 5'11" model:

Actually now that I look at the last few years of board offerings from HL it seems like the Landlock has always been 5'11". Do you have the 5'6" Broadcast by chance?Shawn

Nice, 5'6" I'd go for it. Disregard my previous comments as they were based on the 5'11".
An 06 220 has a RH prop so the wave will be a little easier to create on the starboard (driver) side. 07 and later 220s have LH props so the opposite is true. The 220 sets up for surfing pretty easily so you shouldn't have much trouble setting up the port side wave on your boat. I think it's easier to learn with your toes facing the wave so you can watch the wave and get a feel for things. So if you are left foot forward you would probably want to start on the port side. But its a good idea to eventually learn to surf with your toes and heels facing the wave.
Be careful if you use a traditional wakeboard handle and line as it is easier to get wrapped up in that and injured than it is with the thicker knotted lines that are meant for surfing. Have fun!Shawn
