***sorry this got long winded, so if you don't care about how the board broke and just want to give me some new board advice then skip the first two paragraphs*****
I broke my Liquid Force S4 Grind last weekend. It was strange, I was doing a wake to wake tail garb tail grab but nothing huge and the landing seemed normal. After I landed I noticed that the board seemed a little flexy and squirley and the nose seemed to want to bury whenever I started to transfer wait to my front foot. I did a few more wake to wakes and knew something was wrong so I threw the handle and that’s when I saw what happened.
Basically it looks like the core cracked internally and then caused the top of the rail to crack too. It’s tough to see in the second photo but there is a straight crease across the bottom where the core folder. Anybody ever seen a board break from the inside like this? This board has seen a LOT of methods into the flats over the past two seasons but still I have never seen a board crack from the inside like this. I never hit any rails or kickers with it and the board was well taken care of. I am still waiting to hear on a possible warranty claim but I don’t expect anything as it is 2 seasons old and I have no problems with The House or LF if they won’t warranty it but it seems like an odd break to me so I figured it was worth checking with them. Oh well it will make a good backrest for the bench I plan to build.
So anyways I am looking for some help picking out a new board. There aren’t many proshops around me so demoing is tough. I liked the S4 a lot but am thinking about changing it up. I like boards that are loose when flat, rails that are rounded and forgiving in the middle but sharper towards the edge so they will still carry good speed into the wake. I prefer more of a 3 stage vs a continuous rocker. I’m an advanced rider with a couple inverts and a bunch of spins but I spend most of my time tweaking big grabs and working on different ways to grab 3s. I have always ridden LF but I am open to other brands. I’d like to try a Slingshot but with no dealers near me I am hesitant to drop the coin without demoing one first because I hear you either love them or hate them. I am going to the HL Experience Tuesday so I will get to demo at least one new board then. I am thinking the Franchise or Webb’s board might suit me well but any suggestions there would be good as I don’t know the HL line very well. I am going to try my friends LF Harley Sunday morning and I think that might work well for me. I am also interested in the newer shaped Watson as I like the classic shape but thought it was a little slow. Another board I am very interested in that I think will fit me well is the Ronix One Modello. Any experience or advice on the boards I mentioned or others would be greatly appreciated especially on the One, Watson or Harley as I think those are my top 3 choices. For reference the S4 and Witness are two boards that I really enjoy riding.
