Broke my S4, thinking Ronix One, LF Harley, Watson or???

***sorry this got long winded, so if you don't care about how the board broke and just want to give me some new board advice then skip the first two paragraphs*****

I broke my Liquid Force S4 Grind last weekend. It was strange, I was doing a wake to wake tail garb tail grab but nothing huge and the landing seemed normal. After I landed I noticed that the board seemed a little flexy and squirley and the nose seemed to want to bury whenever I started to transfer wait to my front foot. I did a few more wake to wakes and knew something was wrong so I threw the handle and that’s when I saw what happened.

Basically it looks like the core cracked internally and then caused the top of the rail to crack too. It’s tough to see in the second photo but there is a straight crease across the bottom where the core folder. Anybody ever seen a board break from the inside like this? This board has seen a LOT of methods into the flats over the past two seasons but still I have never seen a board crack from the inside like this. I never hit any rails or kickers with it and the board was well taken care of. I am still waiting to hear on a possible warranty claim but I don’t expect anything as it is 2 seasons old and I have no problems with The House or LF if they won’t warranty it but it seems like an odd break to me so I figured it was worth checking with them. Oh well it will make a good backrest for the bench I plan to build.

So anyways I am looking for some help picking out a new board. There aren’t many proshops around me so demoing is tough. I liked the S4 a lot but am thinking about changing it up. I like boards that are loose when flat, rails that are rounded and forgiving in the middle but sharper towards the edge so they will still carry good speed into the wake. I prefer more of a 3 stage vs a continuous rocker. I’m an advanced rider with a couple inverts and a bunch of spins but I spend most of my time tweaking big grabs and working on different ways to grab 3s. I have always ridden LF but I am open to other brands. I’d like to try a Slingshot but with no dealers near me I am hesitant to drop the coin without demoing one first because I hear you either love them or hate them. I am going to the HL Experience Tuesday so I will get to demo at least one new board then. I am thinking the Franchise or Webb’s board might suit me well but any suggestions there would be good as I don’t know the HL line very well. I am going to try my friends LF Harley Sunday morning and I think that might work well for me. I am also interested in the newer shaped Watson as I like the classic shape but thought it was a little slow. Another board I am very interested in that I think will fit me well is the Ronix One Modello. Any experience or advice on the boards I mentioned or others would be greatly appreciated especially on the One, Watson or Harley as I think those are my top 3 choices. For reference the S4 and Witness are two boards that I really enjoy riding.

I ride the Harley, I like it pretty good. Very forgiving when flat. Locks down pretty well and pops big and consistent.

Thanks for the info! Have you ridden a 2012-13 Ronix One? If so I am curious how they compare.

I did last year but only once and it was a size too small. Still I can say it was fun, aggressive, and poppy. Less forgiving than the Harley. You can butter the Harley all day and come out of stuff that you wouldn't on the one. Both will be fun I would imagine.

Thanks that is exactly the type of info I was looking for! One of my favorite things about the S4 was that it was very forgiving on sketchy landings and so easy to butter out. Sounds like the Harley might be the way to go. Ill be riding my buddy's Harley on Sunday and if I love it then its an easy decision. Either way ill still see what HL has to offer at the G23 experience on Tuesday then order something. Thanks again for the help!

I have a 2012 One Timebomb and One boots. Absoultely love it. The rounded center rails let it carve like a surfboard, but the edging rails are super sharp and tight. If you like a tight feel on the water it's a really good board. From reading your post about the kind of board you like, the One is for you. I've heard from other people that the ATR is better than the Timebomb for people that are hard on boards. The Timebomb can break easier. I'm pretty vanilla (can't afford injury in my profession) so I like the lighter Timebomb better.

Of course it is all about personal preference. i am lucky to have a great shop down the block from me that Applies demo charges to price of a new board so you can ride a dozen boards if you know you wil buy one. Haven't ridden the Watson. Had the Ibex for years (Parks's old board which has morphed into the Modello). I rode the new Modello and last year's One. To me the Modello ( and Parks's previous models are slow so you have to generate more line tension to build speed, but they lock in like crazy and are very forgiving on the landings. Land sloppy? No problem. Despite this they are harder than most to break out into surface slides and spins. I felt the One to be faster, looser, and less forgiving on the landings. I went back to a continuous rocker this year with the Ronix William and love it. It locks in well but is a lot looser than Parks's boards. And the landings are soft for my aging bones.

Thanks for the advice everybody, I decided to go with the Harley. I think it's exactly what I'm looking for. I'll know for sure once it gets here mid week.

I haven't tried the new board yet but I just wanted to give a huge props to Evo.com. I got my new Harley last night but it was missing the metric M6 hardware that all LF boards are supposed to come with starting in 2012. All of my binding hardware is still the ASE size so I emailed Evo and they are overnighting me the M6 hardware so that I am ready to go for the weekend. Top notch customer service right there!

WOW, the Harley is exactly what I was looking for. It's fast, loose and pops extremely well and still seems to be pretty forgiving. I never got a chance to try out the One but I am sure I would have probably liked that too. Thanks everybody for your help.

Good choice! The Harley is amazing - very unique in how it rides IMO. I got a Harley a few months ago....loving it right now.
