Ron, the bindings are super important, good quality name brand with a good fit is what you want. If there is any pro shops near you go see what they have in their close out pile and also try on some new ones to give yourself an idea what style you may want. Definitely stick with the top MFR's like HO, Obrien, Ronix, Radar, etc. Made the mistake once and bought my kid a pair of Gator bindings that looked/fit great but turned out to be total garbage, came apart after 1 season.

Your budget should get you something decent in the used market, Once you have a general idea what you want search craigslist, ski-it-again, wakeworld and sometimes decent stuff pops up here on PN as well.

Not much different then on your slalom, the harder the fall the bigger the yard sale. One thing to keep in mind for any new boarder, whenever you take a fall try and get your hands up around your face until everything stops moving, was reminded of that myself last summer when my daughters friend took a hard fall and popped her head up only to be whacked in the nose by the board, nothing 9 stitches couldn't fix, doh!!

WB is super easy to get up on, that should not be an issue for you. When you start getting fancy be careful of catching an edge, those falls can sometimes ring your bell harder then catching a toe bf.

The Liquid Force Witness is a great all around board that anybody from beginners to experts can use. There are more high end boards out now but this is a great shape that is pretty forgiving and user friendly but as you progress it will not hold you back.

Like Quinner said, don't skimp on the bindings. I personally love Ronix bindings and find them very comfortable, durable and light but all manufacturers have come a long way in recent years.

The Witness has been out for a while and the only thing that changed was graphics so you might be able to find a good deal on a previous model year. If you don't have a shop near you then check out the-house.com or evo.com as they both usually have a good selection of close outs. Evo is offering 25% off closeouts with coupon code "extra25" through 12/20.

Agree with Shawn re: Witness as a very good shape, also on the Ronix bindings. I've tried a bunch, and my Ronix One's are by FAR the best I have tried, fit, support, light, durable, etc...

On the coming out of the boots on a crash, that's a tough one given your hip replacement, the trick is to get both feet to release AT THE SAME TIME! If you don't get both to release, then, it's VERY easy to twist/destroy a knee/ACL! If you leave the bindings loose, then you don't get the support you need to cut toe side (even a little heelside), you could try going a little big on the binding size, and get some thin neoprene booties, if you wear the booties, you'll come out on a hard fall...

                    Hi Ron,

I work in Sacramento and can probably hook you up with a good board. I have a 2011 CWB Absolute 141 with large Faction open toe bindings (hinge tek for easy entry). If you want this setup it you can have it for $200, fully refundable if you don't like it. The thing I like about the Absolute is how infrequently it catches an edge. I also have 2 CWB Transcend 141's but they tend to be a little more challenging to ride.

You can also wait until spring, you can join me on the Sac river if you want to try some of my stuff. I tend to collect it but I am too lazy to sell it... I think I have 8 boards and 5 pairs of bindings in my locker.

Honestly, Fyrhog, brand of board is really irrelevant if you're not really interested in pushing it to hard. If I were you, much like what everyone else has said, I would go to a local pro-shop. Try out the closeout boots they have left over from last year. For comfort, I would suggest closed toe bindings. And then find a board that you like the graphics on. (Performance is really moot with what you're planning on doing with it). You can easily find one on ebay or CL for realitively cheap. It'll be hard to find one in the shops or online wake sites; they're usually picked over when it comes to last years inventory by this time of year, but it wouldn't hurt to look. I usually shop buywake.com or thehouse.com.

Wakesurfing is fun. For a guy not wanting to get hurt its great. Doesn't hurt when you are done. No hard falls. Lots of hard core skier guys will say its a dumb sport that takes no skill like tubing. But they all secretly have done it. I love slalom but when the water is rough and your are tired, its a great way to spend more time on the water!
