    Looking for wakeboarding advice

Bought a 96 Ski Nautique last year with a flyhigh pole. Have been wakeboardind with no ballast, boat speed 18-20, an old walmart ski rope thats about 60 foot long and riding a O'brien Rail 137. My son is 12 and is 5 foot about 120lbs. Is this board an o.k. beginner for him? Myself 5'11" 185 lbs I have been basically going wake to wake and heelside 180s been trying 360s, pretty weak from the toeside on every thing. I think the board is to small. Looking for board, rope and ballast info?

    RE: Looking for wakeboarding advice

    Hey Kateye,

I'm no pro wakeboarder, but I have a few thoughts to get the conversation going. You've got a lot of things going on there with which to comment.

    1) Board. It's a beginner board. Has bevelled edged to reduce the number of faceplants when catching an edge, and is generally forgiving. However, it will not edge as sharply as more advanced boards. Edge creates speed, which creates height and distance.

    2) Board Size - board is probably too big for your son. He probably should be on something in
the 132-133 range (could be as small as a 128 but he'll outgrow it quickly). Board is probably ok in length for you, but at only 18-20 mph you're probably bogging down. Try 21 or 22 mph and I'm sure you'll see a big difference. However, you'll probably have to add some weight to the boat as the wake will start to flatten out on that boat over 19 or 20 mph. At slower speeds, a little larger board would probably be helpful for you.

    3) Get a non-stretch wakeboard rope. Makes a huge difference. It's very difficult to load the line properly with a ski rope. When you get a non stretch rope, you'll see how responsive it is. In fact, boarding forward, if you merely turn the handle side to side with our hands, you will move left or right. This is because the line is fully loaded.

I'm sure others will chime in. Hope this helps. BKH
