New Surf Boards

Anybody picked up a new surf board or have plans to for 2016? I'm interested in learning what others have in mind for this year, why they chose a particular model and if they are satisfied.

I'm planning to pick a P5 Race this year to ride along with P5 model X and a Ronix thruster.

I also welcome any suggestions for a big boy board that is less than $500. I'm 6' and 175 while most of my friends of 220lbs+ I have an old CWB Tsunami which works for these guys but it's not ideal.

I love the Ronix Thruster that I have. Recently tried a phase 5, not sure which model, but feel I need another ride on it to decide how much I like it. I borrowed it from my dealer, so I might have to give it back soon. It is a good big boy board for sure, a lot of surface area.

Last year I got the chance to ride a doomswell and loved it. $600 plus for one but they are sick.

Keep waiting to hear some reviews on the Phase 5 Aku. Eyed it up all least season. Love my 15 Hyperlite Shim though.

Picked up an Inland Surfer Tako for my son. Haven't had it in the water yet, it's supposed to cover a broad range of rider weight. Hoping I can ride it. I'll let you know.

I ride an Inland Surfer red rocket for a big dude board. Nice board but definitely not under $500.

I have ridden an Aku and will say it is nice. When I went to the Atlanta boat show in 2015 I was going to pick one up until the P5 guys told me I would like the Model X better. They were right.

I rode a P5 Wire last year and like it albeit a very different board. The P5 Race is the evolution of the Wire and I will pick up one up. I do like Doomswell too love the P5 so much I am not sure I would switch.

As for the big boy boards....keep on with the ideas and suggestions. This for guests that are too big for the boards I regularly ride.

How good are your guests? Would a Hyperlite Broadcast work. I use it for the big guys and it's a good starter board too.

My guests can get up and go ropeless but ave limited experience, maybe have ridden 6 times. I'll check out the Hyperlite Broadcast as I am not familiar with it. Guys weigh from 220-260 lbs.

I believe the buoyancy of the board which ties to length and material of construction are factors that qualify a board as a big boy board. I welcome input on this for sure.

I would go with the 5' 4" broadcast. I think it's rated for up to 250. It's just an inexpensive durable good board for novice riders. I have used it from kids that weigh 50 to guys that weigh 240. It's easy for them to flip with just a little pressure pull and the construction is strong enough to withstand starts off the swim platform. It gets a little boring once one has mastered it, but it's still good for teaching wake crosses and different styles of riding; like switch footing or sitting down on the board. We always start newbies on it. The heaver guys can maneuver it up and down the wake face but its not going to have the speed and maneuverability of the advanced boards.

the katana is new this year so theres not much info as far as reviews go about it. everyone seems to like the truster

Did they change the shape of the Broadcast? I have an older broadcast and I hate it. It is easy to get up on, and kind of Cadillac in throwing the rope as not a lot of movement is needed to ride ropeless. However, it pearls VERY easily, especially for bigger boys. At least that's the problem I had with it. I still keep it around though because as stated, it was cheap, durable, and good to teach beginners on getting up!

I'm not knocking Ronix but they are creeping in to top of line surf board pricing with the Katana. Will they be built as well and perform as well as Phase 5 or Doomswell. I welcome real feedback.

I have a Ronix One Skimmer (4.4) and Ronix Koal Thruster (5.1). I like them ok. But I picked up a used 2011 Hypelite Swell (4.3) at the beginning of last season that I like better than both of them. I like skimmers better than surfers so I mostly ride the Swell and sometimes the One Skimmer, but at 6' 1" and 190 pounds, I feel like I am too big for both skimmers.

I did a ton of reading on good skimmers and decided to go with P5 for various reasons, including their skimboard reputation, the durability of their carbon fiber construction, and also liked that they will fit in my board racks. I called P5 for a recommendation and they immediately put Drew on the phone. This is probably common, but it was unexpected for me. Drew was great and took the time to talk to me about the things I like and what I am looking for in a board. After a few minutes of talking, he recommended the 53" P5 Hammerhead for me and my 15-year-old son. And while I had him on the phone, I talked to him about my wife and 13-year-old son and he recommended the 51" P5 Danielo Diamond for them. I ordered both boards and cannot wait to ride them.

I have a P5 Trident that I inherited from a client and it is an excellent big-boy board. I have seen them on the used market for $500-$600.
