Big Dude - Surfboard style and size

I have been thinking about getting into surfing this summer. I have a 99 Sport and have heard that it's possible to surf without tons and tons of ballast.

I am a little worried about the cost of the boards and the fact that I might need two different sizes.

Here's what I am looking to outfit:

    Myself - 6'-6" - 255 lbs - Beginner
    kids and wife - 5'-4" to 5'-7" - 90 to 125 lbs - beginners.

Any thoughts as to surfboard size, style and expected costs?

As long as everyone is beginners, I don't think that you need seperate boards for each surfer.

I have a LF Inlander that works good for everyone. I am a fan of the board, though my surfing experience is limited to a Green Room, a "real" surfboard and the Inlander. Oh and I think I have checked out a skim style board. I prefer the Inlander to any of the boards I have tried.

All that said, I may purchase a Phase 5 Oogle this year.

In closing, to answer your questions(I am no pro and so take this advice with that in mind).

Size....buy the board for you, everyone else can ride it. If you purchase for someone 90 lbs, you will not be able to ride that.

Style....I recommend surf style as opposed to skim(if that is what you are talking about???).

    Expected cost....$300+

I also sent you a link to a guy Jeff Walker that is VERY informed on this stuff and is in a much better position than I to be handing out advice. For whatever that is worth.

If you don't plan on weighting your boat that much to surf, you will want a bigger board. Small boards can be hard to find the sweet spot and get the push you are looking for if you don't have a decent sized wake.

Like what Deuce said, if everyone is a beginner, get the larger board. Smaller people will still be able to ride it, where you will find it impossible, or very difficult to ride a small board (especially if you're just learning).

You might check out the Hyperlite Landlock. It works pretty well for larger riders and is more of the "surf" style for cruising rather than tricks. We've had large and small riders on that board without any problems.

I am about your size (give or take), and have a Hyperlite Landlock. I have no problem surfing without the rope, but I have a SANTE with extra ballast.

That said, I still don't have a problem surfing with just my wife driving, with the belly tank and starboard tanks full with about 600 extra pounds of ballast near the starboard gunnel.

I have tried a small performance surfboard, but have not had much sucess eventhough it is longer than my landlock and has a lot more thickness. I think the flat bottom of the landlock, just gives it a bunch of lift.

WE have a 97 sport and starting surfing last year. I am a beginer at it and am close to your size. I agrea the lanlock is great board for smaller wakes, I however use the Broadcast 5'6" and we can go with no rope. I like the way this board rides and it also fits in the board racks. That is a big space saver if that matters to you.

                    Space concern?

How about an air chair, landlock, and wake board on the tower. Combo skis in one "wedge" locker, and a slalom in the second "wedge" locker.

Who said the 210 lacked space?

no air chair....but add a knee board, several barefoot suits, a couple more wake boards, two slalom skis, two sets of combos, a deflated tube and pump....and your getting close to my outings.

                      who needs ballast?

 WOW, you guys carry as much stuff as we do. Even if we didnt use the tower for wakeboarding, I would need it to strap all the toys on.

As for surfing, we bought the hyperlite land lock just last weekend. The is the first attempt at surfing for us. Im 6'1 @ 260 and 45yrs, so I went with this rather large board knowing I wasn't looking to set the trick world on fire, and I knew everyone else could learn on it also. Yellow_Flash_Colorz: IT WAS A BLAST ! All the kids droped the rope after just two rides, I still need a little work. :???: It is a great way to relax after a long day of boarding. Good luck in your decision. Dee
