Anyone use GoPro Cameras on the water???

Thought about getting a Gopro for family outings to the lake. Just wondering what experience some of you might have had with them and maybe some tips on which one to get or what to avoid. Thanks

Have a couple of them. Have mounts all over the boat for different shots, also use the suction cup mount too. I use the hero4 black and mostly shoot video at 4k-30 setting that way you can also grab a frame and turn it into a still photo at a super high quality. Also has wifi connectivity so you can setup and control with app on your phone. Wifi burns gopro battery pretty quick so maybe get an extra one.

We have a Hero 3+ black and really enjoy it. We have been able to get a lot of really great pictures and videos.

they're great for close proximity around boat, in the water, etc, just not the solution for recording wake boarding from the boat. that said, we have the hero 4 silver and love it. i got it with the remote and rarely even pair it with my phone.

Oh yeah, tons of fun. But as trip said, the wifi eats batteries quickly. I have an second one that I bring with me and if I have to I can charge them back up with the USB off of the stereo. Also, certain locations on the boat can cause interference between the gopro and my phone (using wifi) when I use my phone to start/stop/monitor the video. I have the Hero 3 I think. And like obd said, the wide angle lens isn't really great for boarding videos on a long line. Surfing records great with the suction on the transom.

They are a blast. Have a spare battery and float back. We use a helmet mount and a chest strap to get wake boarder's or surfer view. Tether and float back never lost one. Also attached one to my ocean surfboard. Pretty cool shots. Never attached one to the wake surfboard.

I was just on wakeworld watching some videos and a pretty sweet system for camers popped up as an ad. It is called pixio . It is a camera that follows your movement when you ride. It seams like it would be the best solution for wakeboarding. Looks pretty sweet. http://www.movensee.com/pixio-robot-cameraman.html

What is everybody using for editing? I have been having trouble with the gopro software.

i remember on wake world a few years back seeing a mount that was in development on kickstarter i think. it mounted a few feet out on the rope and self balanced above the rope, giving you the perfect shot of you riding from the handles perspective. it had counter balances underneath and appeared to work really well. anyway, i haven't see or heard anything else about it since and would still love to pick one up. has anyone seen what i'm talking about or similar?

i'm still using the gopro editor, but it can be sensitive to put it mildly lol ... there are lots of high end editors out there, but a simple one that iv'e used in the past is called "wondershare video editor". it was straight forward, easy, and reliable. also, i plan to try out the "quik" app that gopro released for editiing short clips on your phone. the reviews iv'e seen say it works really well.

I love having mine. Makes great POV video and pictures. But I'm with 5bison.....the software can be very frustrating at times....some features work when they want to.

Shop on Amazon for all your accessories and different mounts. Don't waste your money buying the "GoPro brand" stuff. I purchased a 40 piece off brand set off Amazon for $30 with free shipping that came with 2 floating selfie sticks, chest harness, headband, bicep harness, 4 suction cup mounts, and all kinds of other stuff. Everything works just as good as the high priced GoPro stuff.
