    Barefoot Boom

Posted the same thing at CC Fan, but I'll take any help I can get!

After spending a frustrating hour in my garage tonight, I decided to take a break and ask my fellow Nautique fanatics for some advice.

Like an idiot last year, I ordered the Barefoot International contoured boom for my 97 SNOB instead of the straight one (that's what I get for not paying attention). Once it arrived, I took it out of the box, and it lined up pretty well. The contour is inside the boat, and it actually raises the boom up a little bit higher, which is good for me since we don't have kids. Yet.

Anyway, when I went to hook it all up tonight to use it tomorrow, I could not figure out how to get it tight enough on the ski pylon. It's like my pylon is too small. I tighten it as tight as it will go, and when I put the quick release pin in, it rocks back and forth about an inch. Then when I go out and put weight on the end of the boom, I can pull it back with one hand while it twists on the pylon until the bow cables catch it. Anyone else ever have this problem?

I'm running the boom out the passenger side, and I loosened the driver side bolt a little bit to give me a few more twists on the passenger side, but still I get the same thing. I was almost to the point of throwing a wrench through the garage wall, but I thought I'd vent to you guys instead.

    HELP!!!!

    Thanks A Lot!

    Rob

Yeah it will give an inch or two, no big deal. The clamp should definitely be tight on the pylon and not twist though, maybe you ordered it for the wrong size pylon.

If the clamp is tight and will not slide up and down you are set. I'm guessing no matter how tight the clamp is you could twist it with the boom on, that is a huge lever. The cables to the bow are meant to keep it from spinning on the pylon. So you need to put the boom where you want it and then make sure the cables are tight in that position.

is the boom moving, or is the clamp moving? my boom will move quite a bit forward and back, but it is not the clamp it's rock solid. i would think that like airjeff said, as long as the clamp doesn't move up and down your ok. the main forward and backward forces are transfered though the cables to the nose.

I think there is only one clamp size available, but I could be wrong. As mentiond above the boom itself does have some play in it. It will move upwards of 6". The clamp should not slide up the pylon though

The clamp doesn't move up and down, it twists on the pylon when you put any force on the end of the boom. Are the cables supposed to be tight to prevent that? Can the cables take that weight?

The cables take all of the lateral force front-to back. They need to be adjusted to be tight when the boom is perpendicular to the boat. You can do this off the water using the little clamp that is under the pad on the cables themselves. The clamp is only there as an attachment point for the boom and to fix the height of the boom, as the others said. Basically the cables are what hold the boom perpendicular and prevent it from swinging back- not the clamp.

My ECI boom will move back and forth a little too, but like others said, as long as it isn't moving up and down, you are fine. The cables are designed to take the force of the pull.

YES, the cables are meant to take the force. Your clamp is tight but probably angle to much to the front of the boat if you are twisting the clamp on the pylon. set the boom perpendicular to the center line through the boat, tighten the clamp and adjust the cables to almost snug. you will need a little play for some movement and attaching clip to bow eye.
                  I don\'t care.
