    Helmet Cam Review

A while ago I was intereste in some helmet cams... see this thread

My friend made an awesome vid of this summer, its about 30 min long and filled with awesome shots... so I got this to make this snowboard/snowski seasona and next summer even better. I just got it today and messed around with it. So far, so good! It runs on 2 AA batteries, which is good b/c it means its very portable. If you're on the boat, you can just bring spare batteries and dont have to worry about charging on the boat. Whats nice also is that its totally independent, as in its not just a lense that plugs into a video camera. Although that would be best for quality, this is the only thing that I found that would work out in the water. You can't bring a cam in the water obviously. Yes, it is waterproof up to 3m.

The quality is alright. Of course its not going to be great, its what you'd expect from a cam this size. When we put clips from it into the real vid they will stand out and it will be obvious that it was filmed from a small cam. Then again, it will be cool seeing impferfect quality film, kinda gives the viewer a cool perspective... I have no complaints about the quality considering its a small helmet cam.

Nonetheless, for what it is, its great! Its very simple to use. Its all digital. It comes w/ 32 meg built in for memory, but that is nothing. If you want to record at the highest quality, you'll want at 2 gig SD card. Thats what we got at staples for 8 bucks, and it lets you record about an hr of helmet cam media.

Bottom line: It makes a great gift! Its totally self-sufficient and anybody can use it. It is very cheap compared to other helmet cams out there. This is a must have for anyone into making wakeboarding vids. Can't wait to give it a shot on the slopes...

I'll be curious to see how waterproof it is when you take a good hard spill. Let us know.

I clicked that link, just bracing for the price... I'm very pleasantly suprised with how cheap it is. That may be a must-have for next summer.

          RE: Helmet Cam Review

I read somewhere that the company calls it "water resistant," but during their tests they found it to be completely waterproof. Since then, the manual I have says its waterproof to 3m. After taking it apart to get it up and running, it LOOKs as if it will hold water out pretty well. I'm more worried about it falling off the helmet on a bad fall than water leeking into it. When you fall you really aren't submerged for that long--just until your head popps up...

            RE: Helmet Cam Review

I went to Mount Snow in VT last week with a couple friends for a small, warm, snowboarding trip. And of course, I took it. I'll try to get some footage up soon, but it was a good first "test" day. My helmet must have been a little too big, b/c the rubber strap kept snaping off. But after I finally messed w/ it, I got the cam on. The only issue was that the camera wasn't very sturdy on the helmet. It was mounted on the side, and would bounce up and down a little bit whenever I made the slightest movement. Nonetheless, I got SOME cool footage, like when I fell you could see a cool cloud of snow go over the screen.

This was just the first break-the-ice test day, I'm sure once we figure out how to use it properly it will be much better...

eh, it would be cool to play with a couple times, but wakeboarding wise, it wouldn't be very useful to me...without the music, that vid woulda just looked like a 3yr old runnin around with a camera lol

might be good for finding leaks in the engine compartment :|

obviously... but i dont think anyone would make a movie solely from footage from this camera.. its used to put in short clips from the riders perspective after you show a clean shot from another point (eg boat, land, tube, etc) too much of this and u get sick.. couple short clips here and there and its cool, imho
