Anybody wear helmets on a reg. basis?

Keep smashing my melon on 360 attempts. headaches that last for 2 days! I won't stop till I nail it, but I'm afraid that I'm going to pay a price later. Any thoughts?

A helmet will definitely help with the headaches. I wear one on and off and it gives me a little more confidence just knowing that the wipeouts won't hurt quite as bad.

      why not wear one?

.... On the 360 remember to keep looking toward the derection your spinning. I learned by concentrating on keeping my chin glued to the shoulder that I was spinning toward. If you lead with your head you're body will follow.......eventually Yellow_Flash_Colorz:

does the helmet ever catch the water and yank the strap against ur chin? i've never rode with one and don't care much for the idea of it? am i being stupid? are there any drawbacks at all to a helmet?

after years of hard falls, i've kinda learned how to fall the "right" way lol, so most of the crashes aren't too bad, but there is the occasional "i'm never doing this again" fall lol

I've never had the helmet catch the water and yank my head. Obviously there are a lot of people for and against them (e.g. saying that it increases the surface of your head and thus making the impact harder), but the times I've worn one, it's given me a level of comfort. I don't wear it all of the time, but when I have, I've never had any issues.

I have worn one in the past, but I don't do it on a regular basis. The one I used had a built-in headset so that the driver and the rider could communicate. That was cool.

I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. We specializes in Nautiques and Correct Crafts, and also provide general service for Nautiques fifteen years old and older.

The only thing I wear a helmet is inner ear injuries.
Your own hard-head doesnt nead a helmet.
Soft spots of your head arent protected by a helmet as i discovered, particulary the upper neck area, this area can call a galaxy of stars when hit. Once in a 1000, but when hit frontal on the back upper neck area, you see a lot of stars an disoriented for some hours.
Also have the idea as written, that the deaccelaration and thus the g-force is higher when you hit the water with a helmet then without.

yeah, now that i think about it most of my hard hits are caused by my head snapping back when the back of my neck hits first..... i may consider a helmet for ear protection though. this is the first summer i haven't blown a tympanic membrane and the only reason is because i couldn't ride....

I love my helmit. I started wearing it because these guys i rode with always wore them and it was a boat rule after someone died wakeboarding out on their home lake. And I have actually become very used to wearing it. It gives me more confidence. I feel as though it helps me in the falls, despite the added surface area. Whether it works or not, it DOES increase my level of feeling safe so i will go bigger off of the wake.

Not true about g-forces being higher. I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale if you believe that....

A good helmet will reduce concussions or the chance of concussions on any playing field...grass, asphalt or water. Ask any test boat driver, race driver, etc. And, ummmm, ski jumpers.

I got a concussion while wearing a helmet and I believe that the helmet was part of the reason why. I caught an edge landing a 360 and the side of my head hit the water pretty hard... I'll never know for sure but I feel that the larger surface area of the helmet made for a more forceful impact (could have saved my eardrum though). I started wearing one when I ruptured my eardrum in my right ear. Now I don't wear one at all.

I couldn't tell the driver what lake we were on or how we got there. We had skied that lake for a couple of years at that point. I knew it quite well. The fogginess lasted a couple days, but I'm at least back to 90% as smart as I was and still riding! It has been 3 or 4 years since the "incident"

I appreciate the responses I'm getting, I'm not sure I buy the g force thing, so I'm going to buy one. I haven't hit hard enough to forget where I am or how I got there!..Wow..thats serious air, but i know enough to know that the after effects were real. Cloudy and mellow'y is how I would describe my state of mind. Oh well. And both sides of my neck hurt. It's hard to put my head down on the pillow at night!

I love it, hillybilly math! How many of you that claim that G-Forces are increased have a had a basic dynamics class or even a statics class? I venture to guess none!!

The G-Force thing is BS. F = MA, Newtons 2nd Law, no matter what you due. Just because you have a helmet on and surface area increases doesn't really mean anything. Yes, more surface area is present but the force is still the same. The force is now spread out over the larger surface area, but the net force is the same. Remember Newton's 3rd Law; for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Once you are in the air and excellerating downwards the amount of force is what it is. The only way to lessen it's effect would be to absorb some of it.

If you know anything about Statics or Dynamics you would know that the helmet and liner absorbs some of the impact, and Hookes Law in some form would come in to play, F = kx.

I'm not sure what some of you guys have against helmets, I guess it has to do with having matching colors on your board, bindings, life jacket and shorts, fashion or something....

As my father used to say when getting on his Harley to his buddies, "I would rather look funny in a helmet than look funny in a wheelchair!"

Ok, here's my take on the subject. Some guys willnot wear one because it's not cool or the helmet they have is too bulky. Buy a nice helmet that fits right and you will have less problems with injury. get one that's cheap or doesn't fit good, then you'r asking for trouble. To the guy who said his helmet caused the concussion, I would venture to say that without it you would have been worse off. Drop your purse and strap on the brain bucket, who cares if someonw thinks you're not cool because of it.
