    Bloat is actually when the stomach twist and traps the gases, and then it fills with air and usually die within the hour. Did they tack the stomach lining to the rib cage to prevent form happening again (common)? Hope he/ she is doing well.

    Word of Advice to anyone with a Larger Dog:
    Do Not let them romp around with a alot of food/ water in their stomach for at least 1-1.5 hrs after they eat
    Do not teach them to roll over
    Be very very careful especially if you have a large breed dog. I have a Great Dane is this is very common for them if your not careful.

        [quote="ZANDERSANTE"]Wakecrashin,

        Yes he did bloat. Never heard of it before but I found out real quick what can happen. Not only bloating but his stomach twisted.
        I lost my alaskan malamute from that last year,I Did a bit research after it happened can happen to most large breed dogs,apparently is a common thing,but upto that point never heard of it before, the best way to avoid it is feeding your dogs little portions but twice a day insteads of one big feed at night and if you feed your dog dry food

        Hope you dog is ok

          Yes they did staple the stomach to the side so it can't happen again. The vet also told me that he could bloat again but would only need a tube run down his throat to fix, not another costly surgery. He usually gets two feedings and now I do like Para said and only give him alittle at a time. It actually happened when he drank water and then just layed down for about 1/2 hour. Then it started. I only give him alittle water at a time now too and I add ice cubes to make him work around them. I am happy to say that he is doing really well and I appreciate everyones concern and info.

            I think that's a doby isn't it?

            And I feed my labs 3x/day to help avoid bloat.

              I have 2 Goldens that ove the boat. Yes hair is a problem but that is why we have vacumn cleaners and children. I have found the key to enjoyable boating with your dogs (provided they are water dogs) is to simply take them directly to an island or sandbar and wear the pooh and pee right out them, put up the bimini top for some shade and then go enjoy your ski sets. Also, if your dog is likely to have a strong affection to waterfowel consider a short leash to the pylon to prevent an unfortuante incident on the water.
