    Charlotte, NC - possible move

Anyone from the charlotte NC area? I might be moving to the area due to a job switch (same company, better job). I'm wondering if there is anywhere to waterski/wakeboard in the area. My family has a nautique on the finger lakes, but unforunately it won't be making the move. I'm looking for an apartment now in the downtown area, I plan on living in the city and getting a feel for the surrounding areas and then buying something. But eventually my proximity to a good waterski lake is key. So does anyone ride around there? I know 0 people in the area so it would be nice to have a contact.

Hey Mike. Here's a slalom course near Lake Norman that you can ski, which is close enough to Charlotte. The ramp is terrible, but it's at least a course.

For wakeboarding and general boating, you have Lake Norman, Mountain Island and Lake Wiley. There are at least 10 or so people I can think of on Planet Nautique who ski in the area so maybe they can chime in. You can forget about Lake Norman on the weekend unless you have a big boat....weekends are fine.

If you're really into 3 event stuff, check out Skyview Lake...it's a private club near Statesville. http://www.skyviewlake.com/

I'm also in the Charlotte area, located a couple of miles from Lake Norman. I wakeboard, so I won't have any input on skiing.

I used to go out on Lake Norman alot, but agree with JC in that the weekends can be a little too crowded for my liking and the lake is often pretty choppy. Norman is nice if you can find some areas off the main channel (choppiest water). If you like to tie-up and hang out, then the Sandbar is all you need to know about. There are also a few cool restaurant/bars that you can access from thh lake as well.

Due to the crowding and choppiness of Norman, we started going to Mountain Island Lake, which is a couple of miles past Norman - much smaller, and never rough. I've found a few spots that my wife and I go to when we want to wakeboard.

Never been to Lake Wiley, so I can't say much for that.

          Mike,

We ride, ski and hang out on Mountain Island all summer. You can always get calm water even on weekends. There is no gas or food available on the lake so that keeps the crowds down. 15-20 Minutes from downtown Charlotte. I dont think it has a coarse on it unless its in a back cove I dont know about. There are 4-5 of us on this website who would agree.

call brian at northpoint watersports. He is a younger salesman who also lives downtown in Charlotte. He works in Mooresville. . . has one of the coolest streets in America . . . there are three inboard dealers within a mile of each other. ..

Lake Norman is fine before 8 am. Lake Wylie is pretty much the same as Norman for week-end boat traffic. Mountain Island is becoming more popular and you need to watch for DANGER Markers (sandbars). I ski alot at Lake Wylie and Badin Lake (45 minutes from the University Area). Like most lakes for good water your best off getting in early and away from the ramps this way you are done before the @%#%$ jet skis and tubers arrive.

Another Charlottean pitching in. Party at Lake Norman or Wylie on the weekends, ski either EARLY, or hit Mountain Island, but on weekends you'll need to do a little work to find some good water.

If you're a course skier, Jc listed the "Davidson" course which is seperated from Lake Norman by the I-77 "causeway." Rumor is there's a course hidden at Mountain Island, but I've never seen it. If you're bringing a boat to Mountain Island, ask a local about the sandbar, or follow the bass boats around it.

Shoot me a note when you're coming into town, and we'll get you a pull.

Thank you all for the great responses! I think I'll be signing my offer today and I'll be moving sometime in June. I don't know anyone in the area and it would be great to meet some of you guys. I'm not a course skier, but I do slalom more than I wakeboard. Although I would definitely like to get better at wakeboarding and would love to try some surfing (the SN does not throw a big enough wake).

I won't be bringing a boat down with me, our nautique will be staying on the finger lakes where my family has a summer house. I'm moving due to a promotion at work that I can't really say no to. I'm looking at apartments now in the downtown area, but after living in the city for alittle I think I'd like to move out to the lake norman area, but for now I'll be living in the city.

Miljack - Thanks for the offer, I will definitely be taking you up on it! I'll shoot you a PM when I'm in the area.

I tow to Lake Wiley usually. I used to have a townhouse on the water...then I got married :|

At least she loves the boating lifestyle.

I was actually looking at some condos/townhouses on wiley online, what was the name of the complex you lived in or street name?

see my deal is im getting a company car that isn't big enough to tow a boat, and at this point i can afford a boat or a truck but not both!

I don't have waterfront property... just tow the boat from lake to lake, depending on what me and the wife feel like doing. Sometimes some of our friends take their boats out on Norman, so we'll take ours out there. Otherwise, we always head to Mountain Island.
