its ok TRO. i have personally towed will all the vehicles i spoke of except a tacoma and the sclade did best. however, landcruisers are beasts that hold their value. and you have to get 4wd no matter what. 2wd just look crappy unless you throw some 24's on there.
i have 20" rims on my yukon w/ michellin a/t 285/55 and it i love it, but i want bfg's again when its new tire time. tires make a big difference. another note on the land cruiser, with factory popsicle tires it can out mud just about anything around in 4 hi. why not just get yourself an 89 lamborghini lm002
also, a buddy of mine owns a toyota here in mobile, one of the biggest in the south east. if you decide that's what you want i will gladly talk to him about the lowest price he could let it go for w/o losing money so you have a nice price point.
Are there any American made trucks? What is the % U.S. parts content on a new Chevy? vs. Toyota? my 99 Tahoe es hecho in Mexico, no Estados Unidos.
My next truck is a Ford ...probably order a 2010 because it will hold value better than an 09. If it were a political decision, I'd buy a Toyota assembled in Texas at a non-union plant.
This comment is in regard to the powerplant: My Toyota LC is quite solid (4.7 V-8), but when we go over the mountain passes, which is not often, the new 5.7 would be nice. The LC is a touch smaller than a Tahoe, but at about 6,000 lbs. curb weight and AWD, it feels very solid as a tow vehicle for our 211. We tow only about 1 mile to the ramp, so the 4.7 serves us well.
speaking of unions, anyone seen hoffa lately? word is mob kennedy as a favor to hoffa.
mini cat is a car that runs on air. you cant tow with it but it's pretty sweet at 7000
With you on that Daniel. Sure would be great to see some home grown support for the home town. I live in America therefore will always drive an American Car from an American Manufacturer. Who knows, a decision like that may one day save your own job.
In my experience (having owned the predecessor to the tacoma and 2 tundras) the bigger and more powerful the truck is the more pleasant your towing experience will be. A V8 is important so you can accelerate up hills or while merging on on ramps, and a long wheel base and a heavy frame prevent the boat from overtaking the tow vehicle in emergency stop/turn situations.
Once I towed a 2500 lb canoe trailer on a several hour trip with my Toyota SR5 pickup (22RE engine 4 cyl) and it was absolute agony as I would top out at 50 mph in third gear up the hills in Vermont. It was within spec, but it showed me that towing on the edge of your vehicles capacity isn't fun.
If you plan on trailering your boat on trips longer than around the corner, I would go bigger than a Tacoma.
hope this helps,
jmo

I tow my Air 216 on a tandem trailer with a Honda Ridgeline. I typically only go about 10 miles to the ramp but have towed on longer distances and even through the mountains a bit. I have been pleasantly surprised at how well it tows and it is much better than our GMC Safari van, previous jeeps and V8 Mercury Mountaineer. I originally chose the Honda as it was the only one out there that drove day to day as well as it did, could fit 3 actual people (or carseats) in the back seat and had the trunk in the bed ( which is beyond handy). I dont want to jump into the political discussion, just relate my experience with something similar in size and power to the Tacoma.
Thanks for the info on the Ridgeline, I had not even considered one of them. I may go give one a test drive.
I have a lightly used 08' GMC sierra LTZ in the drive now, the dealer is letting me keep it for the weekend. It drives very different from the classic silverado. I'm more impressed with it then I thought I would be.

I just picked up an 09' Ford F150 Platinum Edition and it tows great. It has the 5.4 L Triton and it tows just about as well as the 06' Duramax Diesel Chevy I got out of. The diesel was a little bit quicker off the line but as far as towing goes, it will literally haul the mail. It really surprised me, but it tows like a beast. No problem at all towing at 70 mph and plus. The thing I liked about it most was it handled and rode a million times better than the 3/4 ton suspension of my diesel. Huge difference between the two trucks. It also helps that I can get 18 - 20 mpg day to day driving and 16 mpg towing. Not to bad if you ask me because my diesel only got 14 - 16 mpg day to day driving and 12 - 13 towing. If you need any more info, just let me know.
while i think american made trucks/suv's are superior to foreign cars, not 1 american company can compete with the likes of a mercedes s class in performance or luxury. that being said please buy american. isnt ford part owned by tata motors?
I went ahead and traded this afternoon, GMC was the winner. 08' sierra slt with most all the bells and wistles. I have to admit, I like the creature comforts that the american trucks offer. I'll post up a pick when I hook it to the boat, if the weather ever cooperates again.
