    chrome coming off rims

my rims are about 5 years old and came on my truck. they aren't "nice", but i see no reason for new ones. the chrome is chipping off all of the wheels. any idea's on how much powder coating would cost on 20's and if it can hold up to brackish water boat ramps. thanks.

cost is very job dependent, Mobile should have a local place doing it though, you just need to contact them and see when they will be running a batch of whatever color you want and try ot get your rims in at the same time.

Hardest part is going to be stripping the "chrome" off of the rims first, I had the same thing happen to some steel rims on my truck.

BTW, powder coat is the most durable finish you can get...no worries running it at the boat ramp

Due to cost - I would imagine that you are not going to find many people doing this but this list may help

As Chris mentioned the removal is probably the biggest issue
Some nice reading I found after a simple search

I think the typical reason the chrome comes off the rims is that they did a bad job putting the chrome on in the first place coupled with heat. You see it a LOT with track cars that have fancy rims that they probably shouldn't on there and when they get hot the chrome starts to flake. That coupled with the rapid cooling effect of the water probably doesn't help. Powder coating should be your most durable option.

Good quality chrome plating is not cheap to do. First, you have it clean and polish the base metal. Then it is copper plated, and polished again. Then it is nickel plated, and polished again. Finally, the part is chrome plated. All the polishing is done by hand. The plating process produces toxic byproducts that are expensive to dispose in a safe manner.
If they chrome plated wheels the "right" way, people would just buy the cheaper ones that someone else made the cheap way.

Like Daniel said, real chrome plating is a very time consuming process. The "chrome" you have peeling off is closer to paint than it is to real chrome

thanks for the info. they are cheap *** rims. it's funny b/c the guy who had the truck before me got every option on the truck new, bought nice tires, and put a beautiful billet grille on it along with removing all the emblems, but bought some 1000.00$ rims. i actually like the design so maybe i'll shop around town and see if i come up with something. i'll let ya'll know if anything comes to fruition
