    70hp evinrude stalling

went wakeskating behind the old 15' whaler today. everything was fine until i was done riding the tach went out and shortly after the engine cut off and basically nothing happened when the key was turned. there is a little corrosion on the pos. battery cable. it eventually started back up, but it stalls out in neutral or idle after 15 seconds or so. it has new spark plugs. the gas in it is pretty old, but i don't think that would effect the boat not even thinking about turning over. any suggestions of where to start? we are going to clean the terminals, but i feel like it has something to do with a fuel line or something. thanks

Sorry I haven't owned an outboard since 1974 . Maybe google evinrude forum and check with the outboard guys?

I would check to see if the water pump is spraying out a steady stream of water, if not a bad impeller could be an issue.

Or you could just trade up for a Nautique. You had to see this response coming.

oh no, i have an 05 210 sante and so does he. mine is on the lift next to the little whaler but i just hit 50 hours so it's coming out tomorrow for oil change and some stuff, and we are dropping his freshly serviced 05 210 sante in to put her back on the lift. the great thing about wakeskating is that you can get so good behind anything be it a 210 or a little john boat w/ no steering wheel. i think you're right on the impeller. it's a sad sight. the wiring in the helm has some string rather than zip ties. not my boat or else this wouldnt be an issue.

I'm probably confused, but it sounds like you have two problems 1) it won't crank and 2) it won't stay running after it does crank.

Maybe your alternator/magneto thingy is bad, thus your battery is dead....when it does start, there is not enough voltage for your power pack ICM.

Your bad fuel doesn't help...but your probably right that it is good enough.

Can you charge/swap/jump the battery and check with a timing light to see if it is firing?

What year is the thing anyway?

ya i have my ctek down there. i'll charge the battery up and see what happens. there is no electrical on the boat besides the nav lights and they don't work. the time it stopped and NOTHING happened the battery cables were tight, but after some jiggling it started, and would just kind of conk out in neutral or idle, but would start back up no problem. i have no idea what year it is, maybe a late 90's model. i have no idea how to use a timing light. i understand the principal, but thats it. all my dad ever taught me was how to change spark plugs and be safe with power tools for the most part. he is an SL65 kind of guy so nobody ever touched them and our 71 jag e-type coupe just sits in the garage totally rebuilt getting about 5 miles every two years. anything else i've learned has been picked up on my own or from ya'll wonderful collective tree of knowledge people.
