We are labrador retriever lovers - and just got a new male lab pup - looking for a good name - male names already used by us are: (1) Woods("woody"); and (2) Cooper - Any suggestions for a good name?

I kind of let the dog's characteristics and personality guide me. I had a Dalmatian that had two black spots between the eyes that looked like ditto marks. His name was Ditto. I have had Great Danes named Sally, Wally, Erica, Clyde, King, Helga.

We had labs growing up great dogs and their names were: Duke, Chrissy Lyne, Suzy-Q, Lady

I have Great Danes now and would not trade them for anything (well lets not get crazy, maybe a new SANTE 230) named: Brutus Rion, Chloe Belle

...and yes I give my dogs middle names...don't HATE!!!

We have a Golden Retriever named Jackson. We also considered, Elliott, Farley, Barkley, & Bob. I agree that you have to let the dog's characteristics guide your decision. Since his encounter with a skunk, I nicknamed Jackson, Stinky. Eight years later, much to my wife's disappointment, I still use that name.

Long ago I thought if I ever got a dog, I'd name her Evinrude. Well I did and she was a great dog. We had her for 13 or 14 years. Everybody loved her and her name.

HOWEVER, as mentioned above...you may need to get to know your dog before you name it. The way Evinrude sucked up and ate all the fuzzys, trash, buttons, etc. she'd find in the carpet, nooks, and crannies, we almost changed her name to Hoover.

A lot of the time, the dog's color helps when choosing a name. You didn't mention color, so about Bailey?!

A duck-hunting friend of mine got a Chesapeake Bay retriever and named her Bailey. All his hunting buddies gave him the hardest time about how girly it was. Unfortunately she died young and he got another Chesapeake Bay, this time male. To avoid the ribbing, he named him Diesel. And everytime the dog passes gas, he calls it "diesel exhaust".

LOL!! My concrete sub has the coolest 85 lb. Boxer named Diesel. What a cool dog. Not an once of fat, and can take a 8 inch diameter tree branch and reduce it to saw dust in minutes.
