    Q about new F-150s

I'm looking at the 2010 Ford F-150 brochure and it shows, that later in this year, the new SVT Raptor will be available with the base 5.4L 3-valve V8 or an optional 6.2L 2-valve V8.

Does anyone know if the 6.2L will be available in the Lariats?

Is that engine out there already in other trucks like F250+ ?

At this point, the engine is only planned for the SVT Rapor, but there is rumor that it is going to be an option on the Harley-Davidson's also. As far as I know, ther are not any plans to offer it in anything else. I wish they would put offer it in the other packages also...or...even better...a 1/2 ton diesel. Since I live in Denver, the gasers just really don't like pulling the passes at 11k feet.

The 6.2L will be available for F-150's as well as Super Duties later this year. There's no way Ford would spend that much money to develop a new engine for a couple limited production trucks. Fuel economy is supposed to be essentially the same as the 5.4.

        Interesting perspectives.

So one would have to ask....which engine would you buy?
Would you take a chance on a first-year engine? (for more cubes)
Is it worth waiting ten months for?

To answer that question, NO, I would not buy the first-year engine. Let them work out the bugs for a couple of years then get one. I too have been waiting for Ford to release a 1/2 ton Diesel.

I heard half-ton diesels were on the way.

You never know what to expect with those auto makers.

Just learned from my Ford mail-out that I got in the mail yesterday, that the 6.2L will be available in the 2011 SuperDuty's which should be available for sale in early Spring 2010. If I was going to buy a SuperDuty, I'd get it with the Diesel though - which is also new for 2011 - 6.7L. Considering Ford's track record with diesel's, I definitely wouldn't buy the first year model of that. I wouldn't be as worried about the gas engine though. It did not mention anything about the engine being available in the 1/2 tons, however, I would agree (and hope) that they will make the 6.2L available in the 2011 1/2 tons. It looks like some pretty significant changes in the hp and torque with the new engines. There will be a 5.0L Mustang at 411 hp. Even the V-6 Mustangs are going to be over 300 hp.

Still begging and pleading for a 1/2 ton diesel. I wouldn't buy the first one off the line, but as soon as I was confident the engine was reliable, I'd be in the dealership with my checkbook. VW Audi and Mercedes all have really great "smaller" size diesel engines for their vehicles. VW makes a V-10 "clean" diesel for the Touareg that is more than capable of towing my boat. Unfortunately, they quit selling it in the U.S. (mostly because of price I think - it was about $80k new). I'd rather have a pickup anyway.

Nothing official here, but it's my understanding the 1/2 ton diesels will be geared for fuel economy instead of towing capacity, so for a towing advantage you'd still want the SuperDuty.

That could be true, and I wouldn't expect a 1/2 ton to pull as well as a SuperDuty even with a diesel in it. I really can't imagine Ford putting out a diesel 1/2 ton that does not tow at least as well as the gasoline 1/2 ton. That would be perfect for me because the SuperDuty is really more than I need, and my F150 tows fine at a lower altitude. The diesel would not lose as much power at altitude that a gasoline engine would. That's all I'm really looking for...a 1/2 ton diesel that will tow as well at altitude as the 1/2 ton gasser tows at sea-level. If it can put out 20+ mpg than that is even better since it will be my daily commuter also.
