    Dogs in your boat

I can already see myself sweeping the hair up, but it be nice to take our golden retriever out with us here and there. The only way im even considering this is to get him some neopreme or rubber shoes. I dont wana risk any scratches or holes in the seats. Do any of you dog owners have experiance with these shoes? Are they worth a try? I dont want to put them on and they just fall right off.

I found these after doing a google search:

Do a search on dogs. There have been numerous discussions and I remember a highjack about this very thing. If nothing else, you'll see everybody WITH a dog puts them on the boat.

But yeah, gotta give the retriever some H2O time!

Search... this topic has been covered before.
FWIW, I'd never put those on my dog (100 lb. lab) and he's been in my boat several times with no issues other than hair. IMO, the soles of the booties would do more damage to the upholstery than it'd be worth. The dogs nails retract when they are standing and will not damage or rip the upholstery.

We have been fighting this battle for years. We tried towels and blankets they just slide off then my wife made custom covers. They work great for the dog but when they get wet they stay wet all day. The best cover so far is a one piece clear plastic cover for the rear sun deck. It covers the rear seat backs and straps to the two rear side handles. It works great and sheds the water off. I tried the paw booties but my dog just tears them off . I dont think he could swim with them anyway. I use a Dremel tool to sand the dogs nails. This year I am going to try Soft Paws they are plastic nail covers that glue on. I saw them on the Moomba forum I think they might work.

You can see the first rear cover made out towel material the new one is clear plastic

Lots of threads on this subject. I use boots for Nauti (her pic is my avaitar). I take the carpet out or put towels down over the carpet in the 216. I think she went out 3 times last year. She'd go more if she liked the boat.

Ya I know, rookie mistake not looking for old threads. But thanks for all the new input anyways. I do like the idea of layin down the plastic.

            Btw: nice pic nautiquehunter.

              Dogs in your boat

Nautique210, I've got two Goldens - Connelly (5) and O'Brien (6). We go for a two week camping "vacation" where the dogs come in the boat several times a day with us to different beaches or just swimming. Really stressed at first and went overboard trying to protect "the boat", you can't imagine how active these dogs are together. I am quite anal, ok, I am VERY anal with the boat. Laid down towels, wiped the dogs off on the swim platform, made them swim before getting in to get the sand out of their paws (ok, would actually pull off the beach 50 yards while they ran on the beach and made them swim after the boat to get the sand off of them, wife did not like that). Finally realized my efforts were not making any difference. Just came to the conclusion that they were having fun, we were having fun and I would just have to spend more time cleaning up the boat when I got home. It's Feb and I am still getting hair out of the boat from last summer. My input FWIW, have a blast with your dog, he (she) won't hurt your interior, get a good vacuum, a hair brush and stress out about more important stuff, life's too short.

I let my dogs in my Tige (or even better on my pontoon). I do not let my dogs in my Nautique. My lab is fine on a boat... until a rider goes out. Then he freaks out, climbs on the back pad to the swim step, the nails come out, and he starts barking like crazy. I think he is trying to "save" the rider, but if I keep allowing this, one day he will fall off, and I see that going badly.

Demel the nails once a week to keep them short. Also with the Dremel you can round or soften the edge of the nails. Have the dog groomed before your first outing of the year. Talk to the groomer and make sure they blow out the undercoat and brush the dog really well. At my kennel, when we dry a dog we use a forced air drier to blow out the dog's undercoat out. If you don't groom the dog, it will lose a ton of hair after swimming the first time. If it was my dog, I would have the feathers and skirt shortened for easier up keep of the dog's coat. Never had a problem with the dog's nails. I have Weimaraners so, hair is not an issue for me. Keeping the dogs in the boat can be a chore as they like to swim with whoever is in the water.

To dog or not to dog

Both my partner and I brought our dogs in the boat we just sold a 2002 S.A.N.T.E.We have a jack Russell terror (see my albums) and he has some sort of cattle dog I believe.Ours weighs about 20 lbs his about 40 I would guess. Both have sharp nails.we had no problems with punctures in the seat. Our seats were brittle as well from mold and harsh cleaners from previous owner. The biggest hassle was trying to get the dog hair out of the carpet.I spent hours with a shop vac.If you have removable carpet pull it out. Both dogs had similar reactions as chexi's dog.Ollie (our terrier) would not bark at the rider but was very concerned and would fly on to the platform to see what was going on.One day well I was surfing he did this but stuck his paws in the water and got sucked right in.He did not have his life jacket on and the backwash from the boat sucked him under for about 5 seconds.I will never forget the look on his mothers face as she screamed OH MY GOD OLIVER!! The incident did not phase him one bit,he still loves to jump into the water from the platform. But now always wears his jacket and is only allowed on the platform when the boat is sitting still.I will bring the dogs in the new 236 since his mother is my main driver I might have to allow it to get my nightly pull.At least we have a removable carpet now.BTW the booties don't work both of our dogs just pulled them off.I agree with some of the others as well life is too short and dogs are great let them enjoy the water as well.

Yeah, don't stress out about the nails. I've had an 80lb lab in and out of my boats for 8 years now. My dog usually comes out on our 08 210 about once a week, and we haven't had any problems. No protection needed

Also, if you can't afford $200 for a simple vinyl repair, you shouldn't own a boat in the first place. Let the dogs have fun
