    DIY dredging

We've got a place at the end of a channel and the prevailing winds inevitably blow anything and everything down to the end of it. The channel was man made about 30 years ago and over the years the weeds and other material that have floated down have caused about two feet of sediment build up. The channel was originally only about 5 ft deep so now that were down to about 3ft in most places we've decided to see if we can do anything about it. We've been considering renting a 3 or 4" trash pump and pumping the material up to a ditch/containment area we'll make. The ditch would be about 300ft away and 25 ft uphill.

The area we'd like to move is a very soft mud with a sandy bottom we're trying to reach. The area we'd like to clear is about 20x30' and we'd be fine with just clearing a few spots if the 20x30 area ends up being too large. Does anyone have any idea if this will work? How big/powerful of a pump will we need? How manuverable is the pump head will it need to be attached to the dock? Any insight would be great, we're just trying to get any idea of what we could do.

I have a simliar issue on a river system. I think you will have a hard time getting the pump to move the material if it has sand or clay silt shouldn't be a problem. I used the trash pump on the pressure side to dig a trench and then used an older inboard to flush out the cut. Also if you destroy a rental trush pump using it as a dredge you will be charged for the repairs. There are a few manufactures of portable dredges but they are not cost effective in my situation. Could not find one for rent in my area.

your better off to get a boat in there that you can either tie up or anchor up and put in gear and let the prop move the bottom around, i know on our 48ft ocean yacht our slip gets shallow from the moving water all winter and when we move it to the slip we tie it up tight and put it in gear and blow the sand out of the slip. thats just an idea. good luck

Not sure if the trash pump would work or not for you but if you are wanting one I have a brand new (never been used) 3" trash pump with a honda motor on it that I would sell for $300.00. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get some pics for you and an estimated shipping cost.
