    The Gates

What do you think of them? I hear a lot of people are coming in all over the world to see them. Just thought I'd like to get an outsider's point of view, or if this event even exists outside of the city.

      RE: The Gates

I guess that answers my question... check here...

      http://www.nytimes.com/ref/arts/desi...p=GGGNthegates
      http://www.christojeanneclaude.net/tg.html

There are these really weird orange rectangles over the paths that some artist, I think his name is Christo, put them up. He does this kind of abstaract art. And he hung big orange/gold "flags" from them, so when the wind blows, the paths of the park look golden or something from a chopper's eye view.

Apparently this is supposed to be a real big thing and people are coming in even from Europe just to see these. They will only be up for 16 days. There are 23 miles of this stuff.

My bad, I should have expected that from this site.

            RE: The Gates

Personally I didn't see anything in them that inspired me nor did I see them as a thing of beauty. Now all I saw was shots on TV (which isn't the same) but I was far from impressed for over $1 million bucks. However, some of my Consultants are in NY, checked it out and said it was pretty cool. It might be one of those got to see it in person to have an impact kind of things.

What I found far more disturbing about the whole thing was the artist (the female of the two) with the red hair and scary face. Her hair matched the color on the gates and she looked like she hadn't seen the sun in a few years.

Yeah thats what I was wondering, if they were a great accomplishment to the U.S. or considered hideous. For most of us New Yorkers, some think they're cool, just b/c their different, but a lot think they're just hideous (sp?) gold pieces of metal.

The artists do scare me too, esp. their nationality! lol

I also saw them on TV and didn't think much of it, however I do know these people and like some of the things they have done before. The wall is my favorite thing done by them. I think they also covered a mountain cliff in material but not sure.

Yes, I thought I would came to discuss the one hand gate or similar

I would love to go to NYC to see it. (from Europe)
In fact I have at home a poster of another Christo's work: "Surrounded Islands". I think it's beautiful as is "The Wall" as Frost said.

He even "Wrapped the Reichstag" (german parlament) but I didn't like it.

The Daily Show was ripping on The Gates last night, it was hilarious. I do think those islands look cool, but The Gates just don't do anything for me, especially for $21 million.

I walked through them today across the park and I have to say, they're pretty cool. It really makes the park glow orange and when the wind blows and the flags sway back and forth, its pretty cool. Since there are no leaves on the trees, and they're orange, you can see them real far away. Props to the French dude.

I don't think it's his best work but apparently a lot of New Yorkers liked them. You know it's just a little cool that its done by a world famous artist that does this crazy stuff and it brought in $26 million in tourism. Everybody took millions of pictures that will be sold in books, made into posters, and sold at sidewalk fairs around the world for years to come.

Personnaly, I would have prefered blue!
