it is exactly 82" tall x approximately 35" wide. this seems to be slightly too tall, and slightly skinny compared to the doors at lowes for instance. am i not understanding the measurements or do i need a new frame as well? it's an old house.

I think they are dimensioned to the outside of the frame. So it is probably a 3'0" door. the heights varied over time. You could get a shorter one and slip a filler in like I did....or go to door shop that actually builds them (several in Houston so I know they still exist) and have them build an exact replacement.
If you have a threshold (and you should on a front door) it can be built complete and all you do is slip it in, shim it, then fasten it.
