I absolutely hate that video. That stupid girl (and yes, I do mean stupid) has a death wish. I hope nobody on this site ever does anything that stupid. Its always a fine line but if I saw that out on the water I would feel the need to stop and point out the danger. I think the driver is more of an idiot than the girl, if you are going to tow somebody then their safety is your responsibility.
The irony is that often friends and coworkers (the ones who ask if you are going waterboarding this weekend) don't know the first thing about what you are doing but have heard the stories about teak surfing or prop injuries and have a distorted mental image or the dangers of the sport.

I know alot of "ocean surfers" that surf behind outboards on a regular basis......none have ever had an issue. That being said, it's not something I would do or recommend, but it's just not as dangerous as people make it out to be. Alot of the "ocean surfers" I know have been wake surfing long before it became the phenomenon it is today. Part of that is that in the Houston area you're kind of hit or miss on when there's decent surf, so they figured out they could use their fishing boats to get a little practice in. Atleast 2 people I know personally have been doing it behind outboards since the 80's with no issues.
Again, I would not personally do it or recommend it to anyone, but these guys have spent hundreds of hours surfing behind outboards without issue.

Not to condone something dangerous, but 10 mph is about 15 feet per second.
If you are starting off a few feet behind the boat while riding this style it seems that unless you are 10-20 feet tall, it would be tough to even dive at the prop and come in contact.
A wake surf board that is smaller and requires you to be closer and the bayliner mentioned does sound a lot worse.

I can easily imagine someone falling forward and reaching out and catching the prop or the driver slowing suddenly and the surfer running up on the boat. It's dangerous and stupid. However, I'd guess actual incidents are extremely rare and it's probably more dangerous to drive to the boat to do it. That said, I wouldn't do it or allow my kids to or tell my kids what I did do.
