The guys at the Cobalt factory are saying that they are putting ballast in their IO's now. And while they won't officially recommend it, they say that there has not been one documented incident of someone getting hurt. And honestly, i can't find one either (other than that stupid hand that keeps popping up). DD is safer for sure. But it looks like you would have to back up to accomplish damage with an IO. That only makes DD safer by the width of the swim platform.

All the new Cobalts also have a swim deck at water level that extends a good 1-2' past the outdrive

When first learning to surf, a novice begins to learn brake and gas. Lean back = break, lean forward = gas. I try to tell all beginners to turn away from the boat if they start approaching it too fast. However, there are a lot of uncoordinated people out there who have no idea what their bodies are doing. It is very easy to catch up to the boat (by leaning forward), which means you are going faster than the boat. Mix 1 part novice, with 1 part lack of coordination, with 1 part freaking out or freezing and I could see someone running into a propeller. I have seen far too many people with the "deer in the headlights" reaction to danger.

So...no one thought they might have a prop cage installed? Maybe a long shot, but makes me feel better about it anyways
