Anybody familiar with Smith Mountain Lake region in Virginia? Starting to think about retirement plans and was curious about how ski, board friendly the place is. Currently live in North Jersey and have lake home in NE Pa. From what I've been seeing, that region looks like a nice combination for year round living. Gotta have lakefront, private dock, good skiing, active retirement. Thanks for any input.

went up there once in 2007. BEAUTIFUL area, but they were VERY busy cramming as many condo complexes on it as possible. So my guess is by now it gets very crowded. Not sure what your criteria are, but I've heard Keowee in SC is a great 'retirement' lake.
This is of course limited info, but I really wouldn't recommend any lakes I'm more familiar with.

We were just there last month. A friend of mine is building a new home on it. We went out on Sat I didn't see any problems with crowds . Its a huge lake I think you will always find a place to play. I can hook you up with him if you want to get some first hand info.

My parents live at Smith Mountain Lake full time. There are plenty of fingers to wakeboard in, and I know of at least one slalom course near the blackwater area. The water there is amazingly clear. I did a guys trip there recently where we surfed the entire time. We were near the dam, which gets kinda rough, but surfing it doesn't matter. I think you can see down about 10 ft or more in that area. The area in general is very rural, but you've got Rocky Mount and Roanoke close by, depending on the area you choose. The Westlake area has more going on...more businesses and restaurants. Definitely a great place to retire. If you have any specific questions, please let me know.2000 Air Nautique

I've been there just every summer since I was 2. It's an incredible place and we take our own kids there now too (16, 14, 5). There is plenty to do around the lake (which is good and bad) and we see very boats on the weekdays. Weekends can be a tad more crowded but not bad.
We leave tomorrow for the 7 hour drive to get there
