      Interesting. In doing a little futher research, I learned that
      everything we own in California is Costitutionally subject
      to personal property tax unless specifically exempted by law.

      Specifically,

      The California Constitution (Section XIII, Article 1) provides that all tangible property is taxable unless it is otherwise exempted by the Constitution or by the legislature. Household personal property was exempted in the 1950's, but privately-owned boats and automobiles are still subject to property tax. The automobile tax is collected by
      the department Motor Vehicles as an "in lieu" tax at the time of
      vehicle registration.

      This is in addition to anearly 10% state income tax (top bracket), 8% + sales tax, and the highest gasoline tax in the nation.

      I'd chalk it up to the high cost of year round good weather, but I think
      the guys from Florida would prove me wrong :mrgreen:

        We pay sales tax 6% on any new or used vehicle in Utah, and then pay a property tax each year based on the value of the vehicle. It gets pretty expensive...
