Yes, by fuel economy numbers stated the new 2014 GM trucks get 1 mpg higher than ecoboost.

We just hauled the boat up north 3+ hours each way through the worst rain storm I've seen. Not even a hint of a problem with performance. Averaged 15.7-16.0 litres per 100 kms while towing.

I have 3 of them in my fleet at work, I drive one as well.

Don't fall for the 'best in class MPG'. It really should be 'strongest motor for the amount of gas it burns'

With the ecoboost, you are not only getting more power/torque. You are getting it very low in the RPM range and it carries on up instead of falling on it's face like a V8's torque curve. You will also get a bigger rear axle and beefed up drivetrain. My truck has a tuner on it. Now you can hear the turbos spool and blow off along with an extra 80-100hp that is instant!

I would love to borrow one of these for the weekend to see if it live up to all the hype. Do a direct comparison to one of the bigger V8s.

I suspect I'd get the same 8ish MPG towing a G23 at 65-70mph, and struggle more doing it.

It wont struggle with it. Mine pulls my loaded 230 like a breeze. You can tell it's back there for sure but I was getting 10-11mpg pulling it 60mph through the hills of TN.

Does the EB require premium? I would assume it would with a tuner?

Just running stock, no, regular is all they call for. If your running a tuner, I'm not sure what you would need.
on a side note to update on mine, I just took it back this week, as Ford has an update for it. They made a couple of software updates and moved the deflector shield ( insert Star Trek jokes here) from the top of the cold air exchanger to he bottom of it. We'll see if that makes any difference. Keeping my fingers crossed.

5Star is where it's at, really wakes the truck up.....you can choose what octane you want to run with their tunes. I have 87 octane tow/performance, 93 octane tow/performance, and 93 octane race. Haven't tried the race, but the 87 and 93 tunes really wake the truck up. 87 tune makes an additional 50hp/100ft/lbs and 93 tow/performance tune makes 70/100, but has a much flatter torque curve and is the tune that I run 90% of the time unless gas gets past $4/gallon, then I'll swap to the 87 tune.

Just pulled our loaded down 200V 500 miles on I-40 west through the western NC and eastern TN mountaintains. 11 mpg over the entire trip...cruise set on 70 most of the time, top gear limited to 5th in tow haul. Also removed canvas from z5 and turned swivel racks pointing rearward. 3.55 gears running 70 mph turns the engine about 2250 rpm.
                          Peace..

make sure you check it coming back. I tend to get a little better mileage coming East. Go figure.
