Stupid people doing stupid things on boat ramps!

Today I seen something happen at a boat ramp that is probably the stupidest that I have ever seen!!
A guy launched his pontoon boat by backing the truck and trailer down the ramp fast, then slamming on the brakes. The first time the pontoon did not come off the trailer, So he did it a second time faster, an harder. He apparently was taking some very heavy people out with him because they were on the dock waiting. None of them looked like they could swim.

Well the pontoon launched off the trailer without any kind of rope attached to it. So the pontoon continued out into the lake drifting or coasting from the momentum from the truck. The bad part was one of those inexperienced heavy weight people (a girl) grab the front railing of the pontoon in an attempt to stop it. Instead the pontoon pulled her off the dock. She still hung on the front rail of the pontoon, and when she fell, she fell into the leading edge of the pontoon. That had to injure her!! I was close to her, so asked her if she was ok. She said yes. I pulled over to her and helped her on to my swim platform, then took her to the dock. Another boater took the pontoon owner to the unmanned pontoon.

Later I found some blood on my sundeck so I know that girl had to be injured. I think she had to eventually go t the hospital tonight.

That looked very painful!! The sad part was an innocent got hurt.

I guess floating it off was too easy...any chance you caught the second act (recovery)?

I scoffed at this last week because I always hit the brakes to dump the boat; karma got me yesterday. I had reattached the winch strap to make a gas run and when I hit the brakes the strap snapped leaving the hook and 2 feet of strap hanging on the front of the boat and a crowd of people shaking their heads. At least I had a driver in the boat.

Years ago I saw a guy do the exact opposite...once he was done getting his 17 or 18 foot boat on the trailer, he came out of the water super fast and then turned the corner to continue to the parking area. He was going so fast his boat slid off the side of his trailer and transom and outdrive drug on the ground until he stopped. Not to mention the loud boom and several bounces the boat took as hit the pavement. AND it only gets better...so then the boat is off the port side of the trailer and connected to the winch and everything is a mess. He decides that he is going to take his trailer off the ball to correct the issue. He tries to un-couple the hitch from the ball and can't get it off. He did not stop to think about all the pressure that is now on the front of his trailer. He is fighting it and fighting it until BOOM the trailer finally comes off the ball and shoots the trailer tongue straight up in the air and then drops the boat completely off the trailer. Luckily, it did not injury him physically. Only his pride was hurt; not once but twice for being an idiot!

I hate to admit it, but a couple times a season I find myself at our local launch ramp for the entertainment. Do not want to see anyone get hurt but sometimes it's better than watching Americas Funniest Videos! The husband and wife fights are the best! Imagine a day on the water with your spouse after you screamed at her in front of people?

The elevated deck at our family cabin has a birds eye view of a public ramp on the lake. Nothing like a hot cup of coffee, feet kicked up watching walley's make mistakes at the ramp. My favorite was the guy who didn't put the pickup in park and watched as his father in laws truck and 14ft aluminum boat rolled back into the lake. I didn't realize trucks actually float......for about 30seconds, before sinking in 12ft of water.

Because some people are just too stupid.

I can pretty much tell the difference between noobs ( cause I was one at one time) and true idiots. I don't suffer fools at the boat ramp. Ive had to intervene, direct and call people out many times. Sometimes I just piss people off, other times the idiots actually learn something useful.

Our dock faces the ramp and yes it's great entertainment. Holiday weekends are the best. Combine the cheapest beer available , a boat , inexperienced boaters and it's fun to watch.

But on the other hand when my boat broke down a drunk guy in a centurion hauled me in and then another drink lady and husband fishing at dock helped me float it on the trailer.

                            True.

BUT As far as drunks go, I will pick my battles, I'm not going to jail over some dumbass drunktard. In those cases, I usually just make sure I'm out of the way and just watch the free entertainment. (unless its excessively dangerous situation, which is rare)

One 4rth of July weekend, we came within a hair of seriously kicking some drunk asses when these fools in the docking area were launching water balloons from their boat at people trying to trailer up. Talk about dangerous! Needless to say once we pulled alongside, and started to board their boat, they backed it down. Its amazing what goes on out there sometimes.
