Dog owners - need advice

For those of you that own dogs, do you take them with you on the boat? and if so, what do you do about the upholstry? I have an 8 wk. old Lab, which isn't causing any problems now, but when he gets bigger, I'm afraid his paws/nails will damage or tear the upholstry. Any advice?

I'm convinced like me buddy says - "Humans have done more damage to my boat than the dogs have." While that may be true, he spends HOURS trying to get dog hair outta the carpet, and the smell of wet dog just doesn't seem to want to go away. My vote, No dogs on the boat -

I don't allow dogs in my boat, but I can tell you that my Dad's boat has been trashed by my sister's Lab. No matter how many towels you lay down and how careful you are, you still wind up with with dog hair everywhere and scratches on the gel coat and upholstery.

I know that the Gramps or whoever the guy in San Deigo is, has a nice stain in his boat. I have been training my dogs to do that ever since I read the post. You never know when you may run into someone you may want do that to.

I have a Golden Retriever, long haired...bought him a vest to keep his hair together and neoprene "shoes" to prevent scratches. But to tell you; I took him to the boat twice and I'm still trying to get rid of the hair. Had to pick every single hair since nothing else worked. I won't take him on the boat anymore, even if this means trouble with my wife.
P.s. The one with the vest is my kid, dog has neoprene shoes on.

We have a german shorthaired pointer who does GREAT in the boat. Does so well that she will not even pee or poop in the boat. She goes on the rear swim platform!!!!! We just keep her on a leash tied to the pylon and she is good to go.

My pitbull mix has never caused any damage, now my airchair has done some vinyl damage.

There is hair in the carpet, but that can be gotten out with a hand broom, and some effort.

Our dog used to be our observer before our oldest child was old enough to handle it. She (cocker spaniel) used to sit in the spotters seat with her life vest on and watch us. She hasn't gone on the boat since she started pouncing at the shadow of the rope and put a small hole in the vinyl of the back seat of the '91 we used to have. She stays onshore at the house now.

We have a Whippet (small version of a Greyhound). She does really really good in the boat. She curls up under my feet and only comes out when everyone is in the water....I think she worries at that point. Not too much problem with the hair and never any accidents......she stays at home for 3 or 4 hours without messing in the house, so we expect the same when we are on the boat.

Closing in on 2 seasons and no tears as yet - knock on gelcoat!
Hair got to me too for a while, but we vacuum nearly evry week and keep it in check. Now, if I have the room, I take the dogs!

we have a golden that, whenever we put our bathing suits on, goes NUTS! we've been taking the boat out every weekend lately and i'm certain it has taken years off of her life being left behind! whenever we do take her to the lake, she'll swim for 4 hours straight. people ask us if we're worried about her getting eaten by gators and we tell them she's the decoy for the kids. they don't laugh. we do. as for the boat question (stay focused) our interior is in bad enough shape without a few more holes in our upholstery! i've heard horror stories of dogs in boats and as fun as she is in the water, not so much fun on the boat!
