My lab is a good dog ... but there is no way in h*ll that she is going on the boat. In fact, only on the coldest days in the winter do I let her in my house.

Our dog is part of the family. Is in the house 24/7 save for time outside to take care of business or lounge in the sun. We take him on the boat when when it is just family.... When we have numerous riders, he stays at home.

          Dogs & The Boat

I have two Goldens that Love the boat, you may so they are "postal" when it is hooked up and heading towards the lake. I have had no problems other than hair. The secret to success is to take them to a beach or sandbar for a half our right out of the gate and wear the heck out of them. Remember to let the releive themselves prior to dearting for your fun.

I just don't see that rocco.... Maybe I am lucky????

I have been bringing my dog out since he was a pup and never had one issue with my vinyl. Not a snag, rip....mark in any way. We keep his nails trimmed and he also runs/walks regularly....which is like a natural nail file. However, IMO, people just over play the damage a dog will do to a boat.

Maybe if your dog has some gnarly nails that you have been growing out for the fair....and you throw him in the boat all hopped up on amphetamines.....then there could be issues, but a well-manicured dog just doesn't cause issues in my experience.

We love having him out and it is fun for him. My boat is immaculate and taken care of inside and out.....but it is a toy. I don't expect people to act as if it is a church. People get too uptight over their boats.....if it causes them that much stress, where is the enjoyment?

If the dog did rip the vinyl, I'd replace it....no big deal. I love my dog far more than my boat....

I don't put my dog above people(that was never the issue was it?), but I do above a material possessions. A boat is a boat....

Obviously you don't have animals and that is great. They are not for everyone. However, I love dogs....I will always have one. My son loves his dog and they have a bond that cannot be described in words. He picked him out of a litter...he has watched him grow from a little puppy to a thick still growing adult boxer. If someone were to try to harm my son, that dog would do EVERYTHING in its power to help. He may stop the person....maybe he wouldn't....but he'd try. There is something to that bond.....I don't know what it is, but it's there.

There is nothing special about my boat. I could get another one tomorrow and be no worse for wear.... My son or anyone else in the family....friends....nobody would blink an eye. I've done it before and will do it again.... However, when Scout goes down...and it will happen, always does unfortunately. There will be tears from the family.... Friends will come over when we entertain and ask about him.... Great dogs have a lasting effect on people.....

Anyway....sorry about the Hallmark Card post...just my opinion.

P.S. A dog is not a cat, bird, fish or snake.....please do not disrespect the canine by grouping them with lesser animals.Yellow_Flash_Colorz:

Miniature wiener dog - he HAS to go, or there's $#$! to pay! No problems, but he's small and doesn't have much hair.

Used to have a Golden that would freak out as soon as the hitch touched the ball. I left her in the lake mostly - she'd swim forever and loved it. She passed on before I got a Nautique, though. Would have ben hard on her staying home....

RE: Dog owners - need advice

This topic hits asore spot for me.

We just had to put our Dauchsund/Pitt Bull mix down last month due to a growth in his spine that was inopperable, and caused him to be paralised.

He was only 10, and we are still having pains over loosing him. We had him since he was 2 months old, and he went everywhere with us. he was like our child, and while I know that dogs are not on the same level as people, he was for us. You may not agree, but he treaded us better than 90% of the general public treats each other.

We took him to the lake every chance we got. we took him before we had a boat, we took him on my dad's boat and we took him on our boat the first time we went out. He NEVER damaged our vinyl nor my dad's vinyl that is over 20 years old. He did cut my arms up while swiming from his razor sharp claws, so if there was a dog that could damage the vinyl, he would have been him. Even if he had damaged the vinyl, we would have still taken him with us. Going out in the boat is not about going out the ski. It is about getting away from the everyday, and enjoying your companions. He was one of our companions, and the next time we go out on the boat it will be without him, and I am sure the both of us will be in tears. When was the last time rocco was i tears because he had a small tear in his vinyl? If you do become teary eyed from a loss of a possession, then I am truly sorry for you, as you are just way to materialistic.

A boat is an inanimate object that can never make you feel better. You may feel better doing what it allows you to do, but it can not come up to you after a bad day at work and lick you in the face nor wag it's tail till you feel better.

A boat can be replaced and the next one will be just like the last, but a dog has a unique personality that can never be replaced.

I used to have a snake. Avery visual pet. We used to watch him crawl down the leg of the table and see what he could cling to. Great fun for hours!

This is a little of the topic...

I used to put a leash on my dog and attach it to the pylon. But as my dog was a pup and more than a little rambuctious, I thought that the dog may not fair so well if she happend to jump overboard. So I decided to not use the leash once on the boat as a rule of thumb. I figure if she did jump, she'd clear the boat and just swim until I circled balk to fetch her. However, I do use a harness to help pick them out of the water.

Our golden decided to jump out of the open bow a number of years back. He was fine, except he couldn't decide which way to swim. Kind of traumatic too. We would catch him kicking his legs in his sleep for weeks. He loved to jump from side to side and drink the spray too.
