    Snow Sports

I was talking about our little hill "Mountain High". It's only 45 minutes from my house. Not a bad little hill, enough to make some turns and you definately get that up in the mountains feel. It is what it is, a crowded ski area with manmade snow and the crowds can get bad. But it's worth it if it snows or if you can get up there on a weekday.

Mammoth is pretty awesome. The town is definately different than when I first rode there in 95. They added some high end condo complexes serviced by a gondola. More high end stuff overall, but the original feel is still evident in the small taverns and pancake joints. I got a good tour from a local last time up. rode some scarey steeps off the beaten path and found some decent snow as well.

I try and get out West at least once per season, but for local snowboarding we go to Mad River Mtn. To be honest, I think Snow Trails is nicer but it's a 60 minute drive for me, as opposed to 40 minutes to MRM. That, plus we get a better season pass deal for MRM than Snow Trails.

Awesome you got out already! Unfortunately, I probably won't get to do any snowboarding until perhaps late March or April due to ACL rehab. Yellow_Flash_Colorz: Although I did do the "lodge" thing last evening at MRM while my girlfriend got her board out for the first time. I'm stoked about the snow, that's for sure!

                  RE: Snow Sports

I have been skiing since I was in fifth grade, but really love being out on the water way more. I get out west every, we are doing a trip to Jackson Hole at the end of Jan and I really can't wait for that. Skiing in the Midwest gets a little old after awhile. Plus the women are more fun to look at water skiing, then they are snow skiing.

                  CHassman,

I was just skiing at Snow Trails last night. I have a pass their and I try to get up there once during the week and then usually try to ski Sat and Sun. Let me know when you are going to be there and we can make some turns.

                    Hey now Brian,

last year Big Bear had like a 10ft base, and one of the best seasons in years. I know it gets crowded, but that's what happens when your an hour away from a city with a population of 10million. it's still a pretty nice area, and clean for the amount of traffic it gets. I have a 60yr old cabin in boulder bay that I haven't seen in two years. My son goes boarding every weekend with some of his marine buddies, they tell me it's nice?

                    regards

When I lived in LA, I went to Big Bear myself (Mountain High and Baldy as well). I'd be very happy to have a cabin there. Beautiful in the summer as well. Too bad you can't use it more often. Maybe you can take the boat there next summer.

As mountains go, pretty much a bunny hill, but if you love skiing, you make the most of what's available.

Not sure if anyone is aware of this, but Andy Mapple and Jaime Beauchesne were both featured in last year's Warren Miller movie, Impact. It had a good section on them skiing in Acupulco- and it featured a pair of SN196's. Good movie!

Impact, IMO, is one of W Miller's better movies and the water skiing sceen is really fun. You can buy the DVD at any number of sites (maybe a good stocking stuffer...:o).
I have done the 2 plank thing on snow for many years and still really enjoy it. However, when my kids decided to make the switch to snow boards several years ago I decided to see for myself what all the hoopla was about. Bottom line, boarding is a hoot - and really easy to learn. The first day or two can be rough (learn on a soft snow day) but once you get the basics down, the learing curve is really steep.
In the NorthWest we get quite often get what we refer to as "Cascade Crud" - 33 degrees and lots of new, heavy snow. On skis its a lot of work. On a board - huge fun and way easier on my old body.
Overall, I probably will ski more days than board (just got some new Rossi 9S Oversize skis that carve the hard park better than anything I have ever ridden) throughout the season but when the heavy, new stuff falls - you will see me with the rest of the knuckle draggers...
Home mountain is Mt. Bachelor Bend, Oregon (will be there tomorrow thru Tuesday).

just to let everyone know, austin did extremely well on his first time boarding with us. only about 49729034 falls but still. no one beats my gf's fall over the weekend though. she lost control and went right through the terain park fenced area, took out the fence and slid down a hill. then got up and laughed
