    Helmet Cams

I saw some guy w/ one of these at the mountain last weekend, and thought how cool it'd be to have on SkySkiing, boarding, slaloming, or whatever-ing....

I just googled "helmet cam" and got a number of sites, one of which being THIS.

I know I've seen some helmet cam shots in some of the wakeboarding movies, but do you really think that this can take the "wakeboarding environment," w/ all the falls and slaps and crashes? What do you think of this idea...

    RE: Helmet Cams

I don't think it can, obviously because of the water. In their description it states, "You must use a recording device to record the video from a Helmet Camera. You can not "download" the video to a recording device after you ride". Based on that, you have to carry the recording device on your body somewhere while wakeboarding, and thus another piece of equipment to worry about keeping dry. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's feasible, but you'd either have to be a **** good wakeboarder or come up with a clever, unobtrusive way of keeping everything dry.

I agree, it would be cool to be able to record your riding that way!

yeah, even the small v-camera's waterproof cases are big, bulky, and heavy, and can't imagine where they'd go while boarding, someone needs to invent something so this is realistically possible... ;-)

You might want to ask one of the foilers at foilfreaks.com. There are a couple of helmet cam videos on the site hydrofoiling.

I did some helmet cam video (some of which is on foilfreaks.com) last year. The camera was a small wireless cam and had a receiver that you kept in the boat and attached a recording device to. We used a typical video camera that accepted inputs via the RCA cord.

To mount the camera I basically used a zip lock back and some tape to ensure that the part of the bag covering the lense was at all times under tension so it stayed flat. The camera itself ran on a single 9V battery. Taped all this to the top of a helmet, fiddled around with the angle and away we went. It worked OK, the camera I used was by far a cheapy, so the images were not the best. When editing the footage I found that using it at 50% speed or slower gave the best results as a viewer could see the entire trick being done without getting lost due to the background moving past the lense too fast.

You can see some of the footage at www.ozeflyin.net/video.html and then look for the helmet cam links.

Pete, thanks for the link. It's a cool video, definately different. But like you said, maybe some re-adjusting needed to be done. That's a lot of looking down!

Anyway, thanks again for the video, that whole fly-in seemed cool. I couldn't believe the clip about the rope being tangled and hooked onto the board of the other guy!

I've got a buddy who uses a helmet cam when he races hydroplanes. Very cool footage. However, he's not so worried about waterproofing - if he goes into the water, he's got a much bigger problems than a video cam to worry about. BKH

Check this link out for some cool footage of Billy Rossini on his Sky Ski. It was shot at Holloween at Hyco 2004, the camara was mounted on the front of his board looking back at him.

I've seen helmet cams being used on Steve Schnitzer's site.

I think it would be cool to put one right at the waterline on the bow of the boat...maybe attach it to the tow eye and then drive around the lake at various speeds.
