So you don't want the government listening in on conversations that Americans with ties to Terrorist Organizations are having with someone over seas? I guess you don't want to infringe on their rights? I am sorry but I just can't agree with you on that.

And I suppose you think that the left leaning Supreme Court (up until yesterday thankfully) that said it was OK to take peoples property to build a shopping center in order to increase the tax base for a town, were following the Constitution?
Please show me where the Constitution authorizes spying on US citizens? Thomas Jefferson said that any man who sacrifices liberty for a measure of security deserves neither.

There have been a number of Supreme Court decision that were made that were contrary to the Constituion.

Are you saying that we should disregard the Constition on some instances? Because that seems like it would be unAmerican, to me. Not abiding by it.

And the Patriot Act? Come on! Would someone please explain to me how THAT is Constitutional?

I voted for Mr. Bush in the last 2 Pres. elections. On reason is because I thought he was the better choice.

Am I happy with the job is he doing ... **** no!

His speech was bah, bah, bah and more of the same!

His remarks about gas and letting the "market setting the price" has got me streamed. It seems there is less and less competion, which means the gas companies have a monopoly and can set any price they want. Read about Exxon profits being the greatest of any corporation every for a 1 year period.

Mr. Bush is saying bend over and take it boys, al the while him and his oil buddies are ... you know the story.

This is not an endorsement for the Dems, it's just my opinion about the sad state of affairs when it comes to politics.

I hope I did not ruffle to many feathers, I'm just venting.

                            AJ,

I’m not going to touch politics, and I'm trying to be respectful here. However, your understanding of monopolies, and oil industry pricing and profits, are inaccurate.

Oil companies do not have a monopoly. I can think of at least 12 competing oil companies off the top of my head:

                            Shell/Royal Dutch; Chevron/Texaco ; BP/Amoco; Exxon/Mobil ; ARCO; Gulf ; Conoco/Phillips ; Total/Fina/Elf ; Valero; Marathon/Ashland; Sunoco; Venezuela Petroleum

Most of these oil companies also have multiple brands. That's not a monopoly - that's competition.

Rather than a monopoly, I think what you were referring to is a dependent or captive consumer group. Food, gas, utilities, and medical care are products we must have regardless of price. This is why they are hot political topics, and amongst the most heavily subsidized, regulated, and debated in the US. Some say too much, some say not enough. I’m not here to debate the politics of government regulation.

Rising gasoline costs are tough for all Americans, particularly those of lower income, those who rely upon using gasoline for their livelihoods, and yes, even for those of us whose hobbies and pastimes depend upon burning massive amounts of fuel in beefy V-8s.

However, the oil companies have every right, and in fact a responsibility to make profits. They have 100s of thousand of employees, and millions of stockholders that are counting on them to do just that. Contrary to your assertion, Oil companies do not set gas or oil prices. The market sets those prices. Oil is only worth what the market is willing to pay for it. Right now, the market has set that price at record, or near record rates of nearly $70 per barrel.

Exxon’s record profits occurred because it made shrewd business decisions on behalf of its employees and shareholders. Like all companies, Exxon has worked hard to reduce its costs, and therefore enhance profits. However, more importantly, when oil prices where low, Exxon risked billions of dollars of its shareholder's money by investing in oil. If the rates had gone down, it would have lost money. If they go up, it makes
                            record profits.

Exxon's bet on the market is no different than when you as an individual buy a house, or buy stock. You take a risk that it will go down, but you make a business analysis that it will go up. In fact, you were perfectly free to invest in oil futures while oil prices were low. If you had, I'm sure you would have no complaints that you had made a huge profit, and I'm positive that you would have no desire for the government to regulate you or limit the profits of your investment.

                            BKH

A man enters a bar and orders a drink. The bar has a robot bartender.

The robot serves him a perfectly prepared cocktail, and then asks him,
                              "What's your IQ?"
The man replies "150" and the robot proceeds to make conversation about
                              global warming factors,
quantum physics and spirituality, biomimicry, environmental
                              interconnectedness, string theory, nano-technology,
                              and sexual proclivities

The customer is very impressed and thinks, "This is really cool." He
decides to test the robot. He walks
out of the bar, turns around, and comes back in for another drink.
Again, the robot serves him the
perfectly prepared drink and asks him, "What's your IQ?" The man
                              responds, "about a 100."

Immediately the robot starts talking, but this time, about football,
                              NASCAR, baseball, cars,
                              beer, guns, and breasts.

Really impressed, the man leaves the bar and decides to give the robot
one more test. He heads out and returns, the
robot serves him and asks, "What's your IQ?"

The man replies, "Er, 50, I think."

And the robot says... real slowly...
                              "So............... ya ... gonna ... vote .. for .. Bush .... again???"
Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward. For it is there you have been and there you will long to return. - Leonardo De Vinci

                                Exxon and Mobil Merge
Amoco and Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) merge

How is this good for the consumer?

In seven states Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Vermont and in Washington, D.C., Exxon and Mobil have a combined market share of at least 20 percent of gas stations.

In my community, there are only Exxon/Mobil stations and we are paying a premium.

Yes, I agree gas companies should make a profit like all companies. I am not an econmist nor do I want to research the ins and outs, all I'm saying is the litle guy is getting reamed.

AS far as investing, I like most Americans, am only financial able to invest in gas companies alittle at a time, ,mostly the cost of a fill up every week or 2.

Does GW & his gas buddies really want to see more efficent cars, No Way.
